Barry Jackson: Ireland Hits on Late Round Picks

You do not have a coach pick his own GM? Especially a coach who has proven nothing so far. Ireland needs to be canned asap. If the new gm want a new coach, so be it, if he wants to stick with Phillibin, let that be his decision.

It's like my fantasy season, I nailed it with Moreno and Julius Thomas . . . but I drafted Trent Richardson in the 1st and Steven Ridley in the 2nd. I still have an outside shot at the playoffs, but my team isn't among the best.

I drafted sturgis in the 1st

Clayton's just hedging his bets at this point. Laws of averages dictate if Philbin get's this team to the playoffs, odds are he stays. If he doesn't, odds are it's a house cleaning. Ireland has tried, but as I posted in another thread, 5 out of 6 sub-par seasons is tough to overcome, especially since it's 5 in a row so far. It's business and Ross has invested a boat load of cash for no return. ROI.

Of course, and you won't find any GM take a job when they can't hire their own man. Remember when Wanny got stripped of his GM duties? Only reason we promoted Spielman was because all the outside candidates said they wanted a new coach and Wayne said no. Even Marino resigned from whatever position we gave him because Wayne would rather have Wanny than Marino.

At the same time, Philbin is VERY well respected around the league too and it wouldn't shock me if a new GM wanted to try to work with him first.

As for Ireland, yes he's picked some solid to good players late in the draft. But he's gotta get more impact guys early

Long, Odrick, Pouncey, Tannehill are all good 1st rd picks. Long was elite before injuries took their toll. Vontae Davis played well at times, but was mentally lacking. Not a bad track record.

Sure he has some solid picks, but in 6 years we don't have a single probowl guy on the roster. Pathetic.

you mean like Vernon, Miller and Hartline? ;-)

Miller is not very good. Thanks for making the case for firing him. This is what you have to point out as his successes. 2 or 3 decent players out of 20 chances. I'll take my chances with someone new.

My feeling on Ireland is the same as it was before. He's done a bad job overall and he should be fired, but IMO he fixed the quarterback position and for that I can live with him if Ross decides not to make a change.

This article is reaching. These "hits" are nothing more than average to below average NFL players. I would rather have a GM who loads up on premier talent in the early rounds and gambles with the late round picks in hopes of finding a gem. Being happy with Reshad Jones and Jimmy Wilson level talent is why we haven't threatened to win anything in a long time.

That is why I have said if Ross is bent on keeping Joe, he should promote Brian Gaine or allow Joe to pick his own GM and double down on Joe. Give Joe personnel power.

No shot gun marriages.

Agreed

He has improved the last couple of games. He is running harder and making better decisions.

Regulus, if Ireland loads us up with Jimmy Wilson type talent where he was drafted then we would be loaded with 7th round steals. Not sure if you've paid any attention this year but Wilson has been very good for us both as a nickel corner and as a safety. If you don't believe me go do some 2013 research! The guy has played some very good ball for us and the fact he was a 7th rounder shows he was a steal for us. Kevin Coyle have coached these DBs to perfection. Open your eyes and take a look how great they're performing! Our 5th round and 7th round corners have played so damn good that our 2nd and 3rd round corners can't sniff the field!

I encourage everyone on this board to take a look at the last 3 drafts of a half dozen GMs. Then you can draw your opinion, but until people do that this debate is pointless. It's like this Tanny debate, "He misses too many open passes", while everyone is busy only watching the highlights of all the other games and the full Phins game on Sundays. People gotta look around the league, Ireland's a decent GM in the grand scheme of things. Nothing special especially in FA but his drafts over the last 3 years have been solid. The hit % on draft picks is simply not as high as people believe it is and people have unfair expectations.

With all that said I agree with what Hayden has been saying. He should probably get the axe, mostly for the way he's perceived around the league and not for lack of evaluational talent, and the GM that replaces him should pick the new coach. Our biggest issue with our talent evaluation is the disconnect between our front office and coaching staff.
