Barry Jackson Notes: Draft Talk, Ireland Mention, Carl Peterson

So silly of you. FSU had had a long layoff and hadn't had to play a game into the fourth quarter all season. You're really going to let one quarter override what you've been seeing out of the guy for two years? Pfft. For some reason it's seen as more valid to ding a great player for a mediocre bowl game than it is to elevate a mediocre player that had a great bowl game. The reality though is that it's the same thing.

It's not like this doesn't happen to great players. It was a common theme on National Championship night but Warren Sapp ended up sucking wind on the sideline one game against Nebraska in the mid 90s. Just totally spent. That was a dominant team, too. Ray Lewis, et all. Even the great players have a tendency to let their foot off the gas when they're surrounded by other great players and pounding people into dust every week. Then when they face a true challenge they're not always up to it. That doesn't happen in the NFL, where every week is a challenge.

Not that I think Jernigan should be the pick. I'm just saying, it's poor reasoning you're engaging in here.

that's your opinion...just like i think it's silly that you think alex mack may get away from cleveland some how...i'm not a jernigan guy...2 years worth of looks and all...i will pass

and i sure as hell dont want to be the new gm that gives rodger saffold scheme fit and all at or near $7 mil per...cheaper sure but not at the will beatty bushrod etc price

If you don't think he's a good player based off the last two years, then mazel tov to you. But if you think he's a good player and you don't like the fourth quarter against Auburn then you're overreacting to the last thing you saw and that's not a good way to go about an eval. The list of guys with bowl performances that went against the grain of their college careers -- good and bad -- and ended up not reflecting how they ended up as pros is way longer than the list of guys where a bad bowl performance ended up being a harbinger of future badness (Vinny Testaverde springs to mind) or a great bowl performance by a mediocrity ended up being a sign of future greatness (nothing is jumping to mind right now but I'm sure it's happened).

Anyway I know you put the time in so this kind of last look analysis would be something I'd expect you to shun.

As for the rest... I'm not saying we will get Alex Mack away from Cleveland. Only that we should try. It sounds like they might try to slap the franchise tag on him, in which case you move on. But I like the idea of him on an o-line with Pouncey. I don't particularly care which one plays center. Barring him I think I've identified several lower level interior linemen who could help us.

My main concern with Saffold isn't skill, it's injuries. When healthy he's every bit as good as Beatty, imo. Plus I'd be playing him at RT with Collins at LT. I do think it's more likely we end up with a Ryan Harris (or a rookie) over there, but the fact is we barely have a rosterable tackle on the team right now.

timmy jernigan showed me all i needed to see when he was on the sideline in the crunch in the national champ game...i will pass

I heard a bunch of reporters saying he was really sick with the flu and on meds. Take that for what it's worth. I watch just about every snap for FSU & it was crazy to see him on the sideline in a most important part of the game. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt as I think he's a great player.

This draft is DEEP in OL, specifically LT. I'll be disappointed if we don't draft at least 3 OL overall and preferably a LT in round 1. IMHO, there is a very real possibility that Taylor Lewan could be available at #19, and I'd love to see his consistency, long levers, strong run blocking and nasty attitude man one of our tackles. But if not him, there are probably 2 or 3 other good prospects and we should have a shot at one of them. Jake Matthews, Greg Robinson, Cameron Erving if he comes out, Cyrus Kouandijo, and Taylor Lewan. There is a decent chance one of those guys is available and all would be pretty good choices.

The next tier of OL has some good ones too, like Morgan Moses (raw, LT), Zack Martin (RT/OG), Cedric Ogbuehi, La'el Collins and others. If we don't grab a quality OL in rounds 1 or 2 I will be extremely disappointed. One sleeper I really like is James Hurst. He is a quality pass blocking LT type with good size and quick feet. In pass protection he is very good, although not as strong as you'd like. That, coupled with the strength and depth of OT's in this draft and the fact he just broke his leg late in the season and will not be ready for the draft and may possibly need to be put on the IR for his rookie season means he will drop in the draft. Previously, Ireland wouldn't have touched him because the Parcells way is to write off great players with injuries like Rob Gronkowski. But, Hurst is arguably a round 1 or 2 talent with elite LT potential. He has proven himself every year at every level against good competition. He will take a year to pay dividends--kinda like OV and Jordan did on the defensive side. Hurst should slide considerably because of these things and be available somewhere in the round 3-4 range where IMHO he represents an absolute steal.

Everyone Ireland drafted last year was hurt. Hurst would have been perfect for him.

Jackson left out Jace Amaro. I like Ebron better, but Amaron is that big catch radius guy the Fins could use. Plus, not "sexy", but they could go guard at 19 Zach Martin. Martin might be the safest pick of the draft IMO. Plus, you cannot go wrong at CB. Based on next year's sked, they better have enough talent at CB or the team could be in a ton of trouble.

Miami will be fine at 19.

This is actually true. Ireland said at a web weekend event that there were players he wanted to get on the field, young guys…like Egnew and Jordan and that it was frustrating because the coaches had the final say in who played. Ireland may not have been the right man for the job but Philbin obviously gave him no help either. Should have fired both of them.

What I want to know is why is Ireland even talking to agents about playing time? He should have zero input on that. That is the head coach and his staff's decision to make.

Also no mention of Richardson at #19 for G is a total fail.

I think Cyril Richardson is a very very safe pick, which is exactly what Pouncey was. People would complain, but he is plug and play type at 340 lb. He was compared to Larry Allen in the bowl game by the announcer. I dont know if he is Larry Allen, but if he is close, you do not fail taking this guy.

He also didnt mention Amaro or Seferian-Jenkins. There are alot of guys who can make an impact at 19 who will fall into our lap. Cincy are the current kings of getting guys who fall into their lap.

The GM position is clearly defined to me right now. You are stuck between the coach and Dawn Aponte. Its that simple. So the GM starts to want to protect himself and his picks because that is all he needs to do. Dawn takes care of contract negotiations and the contract. Its a broken system while the owner states you need to be a team player.

How the hell can you be a team player when the coaching staff is set in their ways and you cant say anything or do what you think needs to happen and then you have Dawn the owners eyes on the other.

Its a well defined position to be in which is not good IMO.

Alex Mack is the guy I want more than anyone else because I think Pouncey needs to be moved to guard. He has struggled vs good nose tackles and I still think he's giving away the damn snap.

Now, whether he's giving away the snap by Mike Sherman's dumbass design or not, I don't know. But it bothers the hell out of me.

Philbin not big on changes. And I hope he clearly dictates to the new GM what he is looking for. GM is set up to fail IMO but I guess that would also hold true for Joe's fate.

The GM expressed that in a public venue?

I'm generally with you on this. We have to get at least one tackle and one gaurd early and if you can trade down and pick up another 2nd or 3rd rounder you can still land a qualtiy guy who will plug and play and particularly at G (which is said to be a position you can manufacture). But BPA at need so whether its a Tackle or a G, take the guy who you have ranked higher.

But I think a nice cheap way out of our situation is resign Mckinney and Clabo for one year cheapies and get their replacements in this draft who can be worked in. So I am looking at finding stud G's early and late who can also play T if need be. Alot in this draft like that including Linder. Deep with OL IMO.

Baylor olinemen have been busts. I do not trust that program in the trenches.

How does one end up with a name like Ha Ha Clinton Dix??
