Barry Jackson Notes: Sturgis/Martin Tidbits

My theory on Sturgis is the groin issue is affecting his follow through. therebye affecting his phsycy.
I would think if this were true they would have signed someone so he can heal. With games as close as they are you can't afford to have a lame kicker.

I no longer really care about the whole Martin issue, but I do find it funny that he's angry about how the team reacted. The hell did he think was going to happen? He lied to teammates about why he left (told them the locker room atmosphere got to him), and then next thing they know they're under an investigation while he doesn't answer questions.

Hard to say. He has been in and out of a fog since the Ravens game. No doubt he has shown the ability but I can't help but wonder if he is strong enough mentally to pull himself out of the funk and maintain a clear head.

Thats the test! I suppose that the test for all NFL professional kickers. Give or take a few they all have by NFL standards strong legs. The biggest separation likely is mentally how they approach these kicks under duress.

Hopefully he can find that place because physically he has the tools.

I understand the economics of the decision but it doesn't change the fact that you better be drafting money when you use a pick on a kicker. To many can be found UDFA or in the FA market.
Ireland is a former kicker himself. He fancies himself in being able to analyze kickers better than others, because he understands more intimately. Some of Sturgis' misses were from a long distance, so that if he got them - great, but we shouldn't bank on the really long distances, it is the near misses from mid distance that worry me. Carpenter had 2 bad games last year that included bad misses that cost us games. He got it together later and on his stats he has been kicking well this year, but I would expect that Ireland was looking for better after the Arizona game last year.
Carpenter has been mentally toughened over many years while Sturgis is still learning his craft as an NFL Kicker. I'd still be optimistic that Sturgis can do well. The big improver in Kickers this year has been Steven Haucshka from Seattle. I think that he was undrafted.

Kickers typically dont get better, they get worse. So being that he is struggling as a rookie, chances are he will continue to struggle and wont last very long in the league. It was a very dumb move by Ireland to draft a kicker with a 5th round pick when we likely could have gotten him in a later round or potentially even undrafted.

Rat Fink is unhappy ... awww poor boo boo. What a wuss. F - U RAT MANCHILD

"Cornerback Dimitri Patterson, limited to five games this season because of a groin injury, said he hopes to return to practice this week but wasn’t certain."

Dudes out for the season from a groin injury. He clearly has a long healing process for injuries so I think we need to release him in the offseason.

Its frustrating because after seeing how absolutely horrible he was last year, and now how absolutely good he is this year, he cant get on the field.

Jonathan Martin has ceased contact with Dolphins players. He’s unhappy how the locker-room reacted to his departure.

****ing **** sucker.............

I wasn't sure about drafting a kicker, but then seeing how good he was, I thought it was a great move.
Now, he is struggling big time and seems like a waste of a pick.
He looks so nervous every time he goes on the field...or maybe I am so nervous every time he goes on the field...hard to say...
Maybe he'll turn it around and end strong...we will have to wait and see.

No one was saying this **** when he was perfect to start the season.. And nailed that 58 yard against the Jaquars. Or when he hit that 44 yard to send the Bengals game into OT. The 5th round is where you can take a flyer on a SPECIALIST.. Jeezuz..

Martin sucks, it cracks me up when the media or fans of other teams even consider him as a loss for us. Just look at how 34 year old unwanted and out if shape Bryant McKinnie has the left side LOCKED DOWN and it's obvious that Martin sucks. There hasn't been a drop off to Clabo either. Putting faith in John Martin to be the starting LT is the move that should get Ireland canned.

Dumb move using a 5th round pick on a kicker when you already have a good one, why not restructure his contract? If you must replace him sign an UFA as Carp was, and a veteran to compete for it.....our team is not so deep that you can use a 5th rounder on a kicker....and to have him struggle makes it all the worse....

I agree let the hate for Martin go, let concentrate on the players in the locker room.....you will feel much better rooting for something than against something.....

Kicker:
So Sturgis' issue is confidence. The fact of the matter is that at this level that is the whole ball of wax. Every kicker and coach knows their kick range. Most aren't inaccurate, they nail them all the time in practice. The question is can you come in and show that steel will to deliver that same kick in a pressure packed situation. That is where confidence and concentration wane. Give him time, but he needs to fix that problem. Period.

Former NFL player:
He was delusional to think it would ever be any other way. His mom is ramrodding that square peg into that round hole. She foolishly believes the NFL workplace is identical to the typical corporate workplace. It is not.
