Barry Jackson Notes: Sturgis/Martin Tidbits

Thats the test! I suppose that the test for all NFL professional kickers. Give or take a few they all have by NFL standards strong legs. The biggest separation likely is mentally how they approach these kicks under duress.

Hopefully he can find that place because physically he has the tools.

I agree, the kid has the tools as most NFL kickers do, the question is how strong is he between the ears.....I hate to say it but I think he is involved in the mess in Miami, there was a report that another player complained about be bullied and I think is was him, he is the only player whose production got worst when this thing blew up...just an observation and it could explain why he is a mess right now.....hopefully he gets it together soon we will need him down the stretch.....

Sturgis will be fine. I think the groin pull and the locker room issue play's a part. He was money for 4 years in Gatorville and I think that will return. It's a business too.

Martin doesn't like how his teammates react? The word b---h has a connotation that fits Martin perfectly.

It's like he thinks he is entitled to have his teammates respect him just like he probably felt entitled to the left tackle position (keeping in mind he left after the move to right tackle). He is absurdly mal-adjusted. His parents probably bought him friends when he was young.

He thinks like a woman. He thinks he is always right. I'm just waiting for his Jason Collins tour.

I just heard the Brent Grimes interview with Joe Rose. Grimes adamantly says that Miami has a great locker room. And Grimes has a good perspective since he has been in other (winning) locker rooms.

Ted Wells better be honest with his report. I'm expecting a less than honest report that fits a predetermined result.

I would not have drafted Sturgis and kept Carp. However, Sturgis did outperform him in camp. At the time, it made no sense to cut Sturgis for Carpenter.

They both blow. I supported Sturgis when his misses started because they were low probability kicks. Now it's clearly a problem. Kickers don't get the leeway players in other positions get. Carpenter got FAR too much for FAR too long.

At this point, it's best to just go with veteran FA kickers who are reliable, even if they lost a bit of their distance. Fine, build an offense that can make 50+ kicks a rarity.

If Martin wanted sympathy he should have gone running to his mom. Oh wait...that's exactly what that little bitch did.

Carp has been money in Buffalo though.

But he blew here. For years. So, what do you go on when you make the decision, what has actually happened or what will happen when he goes to another team (the latter requires a time machine unfortunately.)?

That's what happens isn't it? Kickers need a change of scenery. If you think he would have played that way if he stayed in Miami, you are out of your mind. Not to mention, no kicker is worth what he was being paid.

I do not think Carp stunk the entire time, but did last year. Agreed.

Agreed on the change of scenery.

Personally, I like veteran kickers. Let a guy cut his teeth some place else.

The coaches and GM should at least bring in some kickers for tryouts during the week. They have an OBLIGATION to this franchise to do what is in the team's best interest. Sturgis is hurting this team with his missed kicks and has cost us 2 games already (Buffalo and Baltimore). He missed a couple against the Jets on Sunday.

Here is a novel idea....Just stop kicking FG's unless its for the win or tie late in the game. I have witnessed many games were they miss a 45 yd FG on 4th & 1. Really despise the FG's since the fist pumper was here.
It is only 3 pts so a TD gives you more than 100% return for the risk and when he misses more often than not is there really a risk?

Have you seen our O execute on 3rd & 1 or 4th & 1???

Yes...Ive seen our kicker shank more than a few also but conceding our team cannot get a yard push is a whole different matter.
I think they (OL) are playing much better now actually minus the two trouble makers.

Carp didn't blow here, he had one bad yr 2010 when he was 73.2% every yr other than that he was above 80% and from 39 yds and less he was well over 90% (money)....he struggled at 50 plus yds and being in the East kicking outdoors in the northeast in Nov and Dec not easy to make them 50+ fg......
