Honestly I'd still bring in Wharton. I think we will need a veteran presence. I don't think we can solve the whole o line in one year with young guys. I'm concerned about Shelly Smith in pass pro unless Benton can get him straightened out (possible).

every down lbs who can not get exploited on 3rd down hard to find...worst case i think miami though adds a 2 down mike...they need something more instinctual on the inside...problem is though teams will get us in the nickle early downs and try and exploit the mike in coverage if you got a stiff there...in addition to the soft front d line in the run game at the poa...

if you do view a guy as a 2 down lb i don't see how you can justify taking it with a top 2 round pick...3rd round yes that makes more sense to me...unless you are a team that doesnt need many pieces and can just fill that one need...of which miami is not

I totally hear what you are saying. You're on the money. But from a BPA standpoint this is a guy we might really like over the long term. I see a guy that can make plays in all aspects. Rushing. Coverage. Against the run. Pretty high ceiling.
 
Hoops, how do you feel about Chris Borland for the LB pick? Living in Wisconsin I've watched a lot of his games, and he is a tackling machine, but am not sure how he projects into the pros and more importantly into our defense. He seems to be the second coming of Zach Thomas, lol! I'm asking you because I really appreciate the insight you give to this site, and generally agree with your opinions.

Helping a fellow Utahn & Ute fan.... I like Morris from Iowa & George from Iowa St.

Jackson from Western Kentucky is interesting but a project IMO.

Disclaimer: These are all ILB's. The Phins would better off to find a 3 down Mike backer and kick Ellerbe outside opposite Misi.

I think he's the most instinctual inside option out there...he's got short arms and isn't a elite level athlete but I think his instincts make up for some of that and if anyone inside considering I think Mosley is ideally a wolb in a 43 can possibly play all 3 downs I think it's Borland...he can play small at times and be an ankle tackler also but he is 5 ft 11 245 lbs and I feel confident he will find the football...reads keys and line play well in the run game...

Considering I think he's a potential every down guy and I think hickey doesn't mind taking chances on guys that lack prototype measurables see the lavonte David pick a couple years ago I think he could be in play at pick 50...

Once I started stacking the mike options and seeing how many 2 down guys are out there it helped me come around on Borland more...plus I am huge on instincts with lbs it's pretty much a must for me and he's got em

I haven't watched his combine work yet to see his speed but he doesn't come off as too slow on tape and again the instincts will help him arrive faster to the ball then he times anyways...pick 50 to 75...

If I was worried about anything it would be shedding blockers and the athleticism to play every down...but again the instincts help me...he may give up completions etc but I have no doubt he will be there to make the tackle...he finds the football
 
My mock has us taking LB Mosely or TE Ebron at 19, and LB Borland in the 3rd.
If we could land both LB's, we would really have a great nucleus going forward.
Regarding the OL, I think we sign some players after the final cuts to supplement the drafting of lower round picks at OG and OT.
I do not think Hickey will be able to completely overhaul the OL in one season. It will take 2 seasons to get all the players.
This year will be better than last years OL, but still not where it needs to be. It will be another patchwork unit.

yeah its a safe way to go and i wouldnt doubt it playing out that way. i just hope it doesnt because i think everyone is ignoring this team's lack of playmakers at the skill positions and overreacting to the need at OL. yeah, we need OL. but do we need 3 first rounders and a 2nd rounder starting on the line?

RT is ready to break out and look at his weapons. pedestrian at best. this kid needs legit targets, not the cast of mid to late round overachievers we have surrounded him with. if we can move up just a few picks and get an evans or ebron that's what i'd do. immediate big target redzone/seam threat that is going to put points on the board. i think we have to accept the bad deals at LB for one more year and roll the same 3 out there. maybe misi inside will make a difference. the RB class is deep. we can get a solid back in the 3rd, and OL in the 4th/5th to compete with a couple cheap FA/udrfa/brenner/garner/thomas to fill out the right side. if our scouts/gm/coaches cant find/coach up a RG and RT out of a pool of 10 players they brought in, then fire them.
