Barry Jackson Notes: Wharton, Finnegan and Marino

With Zuttah being traded, I am not sure shoe the "younger options" are at this point.

yeah its a safe way to go and i wouldnt doubt it playing out that way. i just hope it doesnt because i think everyone is ignoring this team's lack of playmakers at the skill positions and overreacting to the need at OL. yeah, we need OL. but do we need 3 first rounders and a 2nd rounder starting on the line?

RT is ready to break out and look at his weapons. pedestrian at best. this kid needs legit targets, not the cast of mid to late round overachievers we have surrounded him with. if we can move up just a few picks and get an evans or ebron that's what i'd do. immediate big target redzone/seam threat that is going to put points on the board. i think we have to accept the bad deals at LB for one more year and roll the same 3 out there. maybe misi inside will make a difference. the RB class is deep. we can get a solid back in the 3rd, and OL in the 4th/5th to compete with a couple cheap FA/udrfa/brenner/garner/thomas to fill out the right side. if our scouts/gm/coaches cant find/coach up a RG and RT out of a pool of 10 players they brought in, then fire them.

Yes, yes and yes. I personally think that Brenner will be a long-term starter on this line when all is said and done. I would get my RB earlier than the 3rd though (Tre Mason). LOVE the comment about the pool of 10 OL players!

This team MUST shed the inside-out, defense-first Jimmy Johnson smallball philosophy. Out with the dion jordans, we need to become thermonuclear on offense.

Met him a few years ago at the Greater Augusta Sports Council's awards banquet. He was the guest speaker that year, met Zonk there the year before that. I flew my dad into town and surprised him with going to the banquet. When there he still had no clue what was about to happen. I had pulled a few strings and had arraigned a meet up with Marino before the event started. My dad is disabled so this was a special treat for both of us. Marino came off the elevator and his people brought him over to us where we got to meet him and talk for about 5 min. Gave my camera to a random guy and he screwed up every photo. We were lucky that the local news was there and was shooting out meet up....a surprise I didn't know would happen.

So as we are winding up I asked Dan to sign something for me. Of all the things I could have had him sign I gave him a photo of me and my mom and asked him to sign that. Why that? A few years before that, in the same hotel I am meeting Marino, my mom presented me with a framed 1984 MVP Marino signed jersey for my 30th birthday, which just happened to be the same week as my sisters wedding. So at the wedding reception she gave is to me. That photo is the 2 of us with that jersey. My mom died very unexpectedly a year later. Marino was very touched by the story and was very welcoming in signing it.

Pretty damn cool, a better memory than any $100 autograph would get you and it is very cool to see that signed photo on the wall next to the framed signed jersey.

Travelle Wharton would be perfect for a one year deal. The retirement word came out of his mouth. his agent must be shaking his head.

He apparently still wants to play but one year no risk deal with incentives would be nice insurance and then get your RT in the draft and another G later. Set.

Wharton was a guy on my list early on but that who retirement thing popped up.

I would be coold with this move. much better than the Chicago G we picked up/cut.

Brenner long term? He showed some potential, and hopefully Benton can coach him up. But I would still sign Wharton to 1-2 years to mentor Smith and Brenner. Considering the only reason we didn't make the playoffs is our OL (58 sacks), id say OL has to be our #1 priority in the draft. I would pick an RT in the 1st round, and an OG in the 2nd. Preferrably guys who are known for their pass blocking skills. Next year, we draft an LT in the 1st round to groom under Albert.

also wouldnt be shocked if miami took xavier sua filo

even though many are yacking about the depth at the o-line in this draft, sua filo is the CREAM OF THE CROP of guards as far as i am concerned [and others].

this is a guy you draft and he walks right on and you dont worry for another 10 years or so or unless there is some f/a blunder. i seed a pro bowl guard without a doubt and having a line featuring he and albert [pro bowler], mike pouncy [pro bowler] out the gate looks pretty damned good.

YES! THERE IS DEPTH but that only means you are waiting for what likely will be lesser talent. projections are just that. with the worst o-line in the nfl and 59 sacks allowed, do we rebuild with sure fire guys like sua filo or wait and hope some 5th round guard can pan out? we have seen how that has worked for the last 15 years. ANY talent, REAL talent is mostly at the top and when you have a need, and a big time prospect is staring you in the face, YOU TAKE IT!! and no one will be yaking about a guard at #19 if he is a 10 year starter and pro bowler.

they WILL if we wait untill the 5th or 6th round for a guard and he cant beat out whats already in camp.

i ALWAYS like play makers up top of the draft. point scorers, sack artists, shut down/ball hawk db's. a DB at #19 would be just fine with me if one of the top cb's fall or one of the two safety's is still available [we cant have enough in todays nfl and we cant count on geezers forever. BUT..... if those are not present and a guy like sua filo is available we need to take him and get this o-line up to nfl standards. martin is another pic that should be considered.

i actually have sua filo as my finz pic [currently] in the first round.

Do what ever it takes to fix the line. I'm ok with with four draft picks going to address the problem. Anthony Steen, James Hurst, and Spencer Long are each coming off injury, but could be steals once healthy. I could live with Zach Martin, Anthony Steen, Brandon Thomas and James Hurst. That could result in o-line not being a priority for the next four years, especially if Dallas Thomas starts to come around this year too.

Everybody keeps suggesting signing a stop gap lineman for this year so Miami can draft a running back in the second or third round, but it might make more sense to sign a stop gap running back like Jones-Drew this year and look to the 2015 draft to address the position long term.

IMO you cant run or pass without protection , We need to FIX the OL while we can right now there are options at RB in FA , good ones , OL isnt nowhere as good in FA right now , its easier to fix the RB, WR exc.. to where its hard to find OL thats good , and not just a body out there ,if we want to be able to run and pass WE NEED TO FIX THE OL , NOT with just some bodies , we need good OL to have success ...

i am sure dan would like to do just that. unfortunately........... HE HAS NO MONEY!!!

he got into that bad, REAL BAD financial deal that he bet the farm on and it tanked almost immediately. i believe he was in some form of bankruptcy.

then of course the love child and affair came about and there were monies involved there......... .

life isnt so golden for danny any longer. this thing of being sacked from cbs could really be a downfall for him, even worse than the big investment blunder. without big money you dont open big money doors and danny star has LOOOOONG fallen being kept alive by old finz geezers. thats reality. and a hundred bux a pop for an autograph might net him 1500.00 at a good convention.

and that aint gassin' up the bentley anymore.

Hmm I didn't hear about this. What bad investment did he get dinged for? What's his net worth these days?

The biggest story there that Mickey Arrison wants to buy the Marlins.

Actually Zach Martin may be the best guard or RT at 19 if he is there that will play for 10 years. If not maybe Filo,Mosely, or Gilbert or trade down.
