Barry Jackson Sports Buzz: Philbin excited about potential of TE Charles Clay

I did not say I wanted to lose Fasano. I was questioning whether Philbin sees Clay as a TE and as a result views Fasano then as a worth while cap casulty.

Fasano stays. If Clay turns into our playmaking 2nd TE, that's one less hole we need to fill. Soliai will get overpaid more by a NT-hungry team, so he'll be gone. I'd guess we keep Langford.

Fasano reminds me a lot of Chris Chambers. I liked Chambers, but we all knew he would make that great catch and then drop like 3 straight into his helmet. I also start to sweat when I see Fasano carry the ball. He lugs it around like a sub sandwich. He also bothers me because I can see him being a really great TE, either it's just not there, he's content or it has had a lot to do with our coaching. I remember seeing games where he would light it up first half, second half he would just dissapear...not to mention when he's running it looks almost painful.

correction: slew of dropped passes and too many fumbles. I still like him and would prefer he stay in aqua, still. He has to work on his hands and ball control, other than that i think he's a very good TE.

Clay looks like a keeper and I'm glad we've heard a vote of confidence already from philbin. He could be our A.Hernandez perhaps.
fasano has had 2 fumbles in his career , both in 2009
here a list of tight end dropped % for 2010, he was in the top 5 for least drop%, he had 2 drops in 2010.

last year i didnt see him on the 2011 leader list which went down to 5 drops on this list.

so im not seeing the slew of dropped passes and too many fumbles. if anything his 18 tds in 4 years clearly makes up for the 2 fumbles and a handful of dropped passes.

I like what I saw from Clay last season, he should be our #2 TE/H-back for now if we don't upgrade. Play Hilliard as our FB. After he caught many spectacular grabs, he made some solid moves and got yac.

I'd hate lose Soliai, 43 or 34...

One player that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin gets excited talking about? Charles Clay. “We love his versatility.” He envisions lining him up sometimes “at tight end, the next time next to the tight end, the next time as a receiver.” Philbin loves to create mismatches, and Clay is the ideal chess piece for doing that.

Though Philbin isn’t animated or loud like Rex Ryan or Tony Sparano, he commands players' attention very well, according to those who have been around him. "He can step in a room and he's just got a natural presence about him,” said Seahawks GM John Schneider, who worked with Philbin in Green Bay. "He has that 'it' quality as a leader."

The Dolphins and the agent for Kendall Langford spoke last week, sources said, and talks will continue, with a new deal remaining a realistic possibility but not certain by any means. Dolphins opponents are hoping they lose both Paul Soliai (likely) and Langford.

As I have been saying the whole off-season, of all the players from last years draft, Clay to me is by far the most exciting. This kid is ready to explode, and if all goes well with a better QB, he is going to be a nightmare of a matchup problem for defenses.

I like this guy as well. He seems to be a match up problem.

His momma call him Clay, I'm gonna call him Clay. Who's Next?
(Joe Louis was 146 years old when he lost to Rocky Marciano)

People need to stop trying to get rid of Fasano. He's a good all around TE.

I love the Fasano/Clay combo. I think they compliment each other very well. I hope Clay works hard this offseason because he could very well be the key to opening up this offense.

Fasano is a pretty good TE. He does everything well. He dropped a few more passes than usual this season, but remember he sustained a concussion during the season. He wasn't 100%.
He is our best TE, and that includes Clay.

I liked what Clay did last year and expect him to develop more if use enough. Solaia is not worth the money he wants...he's had 1 top year and that was a contract year for him.

Ozzy rules!!

Clay is a complimentary, receiving threat type of TE. Fasano isn't exactly the explosove sort, but I'd definitely keep him as a base TE.

Fasano is making way too much to be any worth to us. cut our losses now and free up cap space

your nuts if you think fasano is good. clay barely played this year and the times he was in, he was extremely impressive. clay is better than fasano and his potential hasn't even been sniffed.

Guy is one of the toughest
Players on our offense. We went the whole season with clay and lex hilliard as leaf blockers only because we have fasano. Hes as close to an extra offensive lineman you get without actually putting one in. The slew of beautiful one handed catches, td's, more then willingness to block, and love for contact are not only inspiring but intimidating o defenders. He constantly gets under defenders skin. He is the epitomy of a blue collar player. One of the most complete tight ends in the nfl and a player who resembles and older time. Clay had some flashes.
