Ben Volin: Dolphins in negotiations with Alex Smith

relax everyone. smith will back out at last second as soon as he gets a text from harbaugh.

If the remaining options are Alex Smith, Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden, then Alex Smith is definitely the "I'm going to throw up" option.

I would take him over Flynn.

I wanted him last year man. High IQ, can overcome adversity, very mobile, good arm, big playoff win under his belt (should of had 2 of them), proved he makes solid decisions last year just needed some solid coaching and I think we have that here with Philbin/Sherman and the system would fit extremely well. And he is only 27.

I was ok with Flynn if Philbin wanted him but I wasn't thrilled . . . Smith is a better option IMO as Flynn is by all accounts limited in a sense from becomming a big time franchise QB, and probably the reason why we didn't want him. Alex has all the physical tools and you know what, I think he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder, which never hurts.

It would shock me if he signed, because I didn't think he was an option.

I would get on board with it but im still not sure how serious the interest level is from either side. Maybe ross will throw some extra bills at him just to stick it to the 9ers. Alex Smith then draft blackmond might not be a bad start.... will see tho...

Its funny how the Smith haters won't give the guy ANY credit for leading his team to a 13-3 record. It was all Harbaugh and the defense, Smith contributed nothing. He just went along for the ride.
The guy is mentally tough and has had no opportunity to develop his game until last yr,. How many coaching changes/OC's has he endured the last 6 yrs?

at this point, we r better with moore.. I feel bad for dolphans everywhere. Our FO is a serious joke.. we need to build around moore, wheather its through the draft or in free agency.

He was #1 overall for a reason, he has all of the physical tools and he is very intelligent. He would actually be a real good fit down here in Miami.

the last 6 yrs?
People say the same thing about Tim Tebow plus the 49ers had an easy schedule last year. Only "hard" team they played and won was the Lions. (2 Lions receivers got ejected from that game and the score was close)

just wondering what the spin is going to be from national media when SF loses out on Manning and they get stuck with no qb? karma comes back ya know.

no word from manning on when he will decide.

Hope another surprise team enters the race. Luv you peyton! thanks for the help!

He was #1 overall for a reason

Go back and look at the top of the 2005 draft. That will show you why he was drafted #1. I'm not opposed to signing him at all. I just feel like he'll be another good quarterback who's similar to Matt Moore.

You don't really believe he was the main reason for SF's season last year do you? He's a fit for any team with a top 1 or 2 defense as a game manager. SF got there because of a great defense and Smith not taking ANY chances with the ball. That will not work for us IMO. I'd rather stick with Moore than give him 9mm a season.

would gladly welcome smith aboard. kept waiting for him to choke in the playoffs and he did nothing but impress me. definitely would take him over flynn. you also cant discount the rough times hes been through, he is mentally stronger from it.

He was drafted over Aaron Rodgers.

Im not a big Alex Smith fan either, but people thought he was more talented than Rodgers at the time.

This is another case of Miami being scared to take a chance. $8 mil a year is actually more than Flynn got.

Instead of gambling on Flynn potentially being great, they're more willing to go with a guy they know will at least be decent, and not get burned.

I'm not crucifying the potential deal itself, just the perpetual lack of balls from our front office.
