Best all time Dolphin back-up QB

I've got to go with Don Strock.....in his time, over about a ten year period, he was the best relief QB in the league. We won a bunch of games with Strock coming off the bench filling in for an injured Bob Greise and splitting time with Woodley. Personally, one of the most memorable events in watching sports was when Strock came into the San Diego playoff game and after being down 24-0 got us back in the game before the half. The hook and lateral play, right before the half, still sends chills down my spine when I see the old replays. I think that was the most pumped I've ever been watching a football game.

Damned if you guys aren't right. Apologies for acting like a spelling nanny.

Scott Mitchell has my vote since I've never really seen Strock or Morral play....actually now that I think about it, Griese(Brian) might have been our best backup.

if Don Strock starts Super Bowl 17, the Miami Dolphins beat Washington... David Woodley completed exactly 4 passes the entire game... he couldn't sustain any drives, and our defense (which was dominating) completely wore down as the game went along...

Shula made the same mistake not bringing in Strock at halftime as he did in SB III when he didn't bring in Unitas for Morall....

Personally, i always held a belief that Strock just wasn't a Shula guy... He was a bit of a playboy and was very independent... He also held out nearly every summer to avoid camp... A different time in the NFL, for sure...

Thats a great point that never gets discussed, not about being a Shula guy, but how he should have been in the game at half time or earlier.

Morrall deserves a ton of praise for the 72 team, and Strock (who was a Shula guy - drafted by him,and play for him behind two hall of fame QBs and, er, Woodley) was my favorite backup.

Guy Benjamin was a third stringer the whole time he was here, and I don't think he fared much better in San Franciso. I dreaded Bernie and Erickson. DeBerg was fun to watch, especially in the game against Kansas City. Mitchell was OK too.

Here's one to consider: Ron Jaworski? It was the very end of his career. :dolphins:

I don't think you can say Deberg, Jaworski, or Morral were really backups. That would be like calling Joe Furgerson or Steve Young a back up. All of those guys had a ton of career starts.

Strock was a true career back up and was great at it. He was a drop-back passer and the type of guy who could come in when your offense was tanking and move the ball. Someone said Shula should have brought him in during the halftime of the 82 Superbowl...that is probably true but remember we led for most of that game. Would have been nice to give him a try though.

PS. Strock was a MAJOR reason for Marino's early success. Don't know how many times I saw him showing Dan photos on the sidelines between plays. As soon as Strock left, Dan's number suffered big time.

Earl Morrall or Don Strock ,and why?

For one season, Morrall, overrall, Strock. Strock was a second coach and someone who was very reliable. He basically got us to that Super Bowl in 82. Morrall was great as well, but his contributions were basically that one year, albeit a great year, but if you are talking history of the Dolphins, Strock had many years of contributing.

Best all time back-up QB was Dan Marino in 1983.

He was Woodley's back up through 3 games of the 1983 season.

Marino didnt start until around the 6th game

LOL because you havent seen them doesnt discount them if you are talking history of the fins. Griese cant be considered IMO, he played here one year, started 4. How many did he win? 1? How is that the best backup in our history? Look at the books, check out how many games Strock won? If it werent for him, we would have been 4-12 in the Woodley era.

Earl Morral at that point was a backup, he had backed up hall of famer Johnny Unitas and he then backed up hall of famer Bob Griese.

I get your point about the other two, but really by the time they were here, at the ages they were at, they were backups as well.
