better this year or last in the fa signing?

Wallace in no way earned his paycheck.

You're correct in that Wallace does one thing well and that's run fast. What he lacks is running precise routes and he seems to really miss the drive to fight for the ball. How many 50/50 balls did he win? I can't think of any. I don't even recall him going after them. He waits for the ball to drop into his hands. His route tree is a sapling. He gets in and out of his breaks slow. He's fast once he gets going but he isn't explosive. Has poor hands. Isn't physical at all.

Is he the same player he was in Pitt? Yes but that doesn't mean he played up to his paycheck. Not even close.

He's the same player he was in Pitt. He's doing the same things. His skill set is the same. That's what we paid for. We didn't pay for a different skill set. We didn't pay for a guy that can run exacting routes. We didn't pay for a guy that's going to go up against defenders and fight for the ball. We paid for Mike Wallace and Mike Wallace never did those things. Now he may not be the kind of receiver you want, but he's exactly what we paid for. This is like buying a Lamborghini and complaining that it's a lousy off-road vehicle considering the big price tag.

I think both guys earned their paychecks last year. Wallace did what Wallace does. He runs fast. He's never been a guy who was going to go up and fight to get the ball on any consistent basis. I don't know why so many people here thought his game was going to change just because he put on a Miami uniform and got a big paycheck. His skill set is what it is. It's up to our coaches to take advantage of it as well as Pittsburgh did.

Wallace is a great player, and they chose him over a guy like Greg Jennings, who was a better fit. The roster is what it is because that's what coaches and managers decided, together. Once committing to Wallace, they had yet another option, which was to get a WR in the draft opposite him, and make Hartline the 3rd receiver. Cordarrelle Patterson and Mike Wallace would have been a nightmare to cover.

There's no doubt that we had a great free agency last year and landed some good players. But if you can't use them the right way, there's no point. Wallace and Ellerbe were high performers on their previous teams, and yet in Miami we couldn't take advantage of their strengths.

Free agency is about what the coaches want, not just want the Ireland or Hickey want. Ellerbe and Wheeler were brought in because they were better at getting after the quarterback than the linebackers they replaced. That's Kevin Coyle's idea. On offense, the coaches were looking for more speed, and so out goes guys like Anthony Fasano and in comes Wallace and Keller. Philbin doesn't want a fullback? Out goes the fullback. Much of what happens is dictated by coaching and scheme.

By your standards, Tannehill didn't earn his paycheck with all the under/over throws. Wallace did what
he does, get open deep, Tannehill couldn't put it out there... Blame the lame arm of your QB

The 2 lb signings ruined last years free agency. I like the keller signing but he got hurt. I think we overpaid hartline and wallace. So I think we did better this year.Other than albert the other deals were short money. If hickey can draft better than Ireland which shouldnt be too hard, thats where we can really make this team better

I agree big time with the two LB signings. Ireland ****ed us at LB

Last year we gave wallace the same amt jake long and greg jennings got paid elsewhere. Fail. We dumped 2 starting LBers and brought in ellerbe and wheeler. Fail. We kept jmart and incognito even tho the team knew there were issues with both players.ail. we traded up and lost a 2 nd rd pick for a guy who wd be out of ideal position, backing up pur best player. Fail. I dont know how things play out, but imho this offseason has been better so far wirhout knowing how the draft plays out yet.

back to back years underwhelming results...way too much risk this year

How can anyone possibly know until they see them play on the field in some real games? I'll remind you that a great many people on this board watched the first few games last year and were dead sure we'd solved our o-line problems.

Seriously? If so, they obviously have no clue. I don't know how anyone could think the o-line problems were solved if they really watched the first few games of the season. They were giving up about 5 sacks per game. :rolleyes2:

You don't have to convince me. I wasn't comfortable with the line even before the season started. But people here were crowning Ireland a genius and declaring our o-line plenty good enough.

All of these changes point to Philbin and Coyle. We're still in transition and the team is suffering for it. They needed money to sign Wallace, they needed to get more speed on the team and move away from smashmouth football and running/stopping the run, toward blitzing and pressuring the QB, and throwing the football.

Ireland upgraded from Ayodele, Porter and Crowder,... to Dansby and Burnett. They were solid players, and the defense was tough against the run and tough in the red zone. That went out the door because of the new coaches.

This is the year their program HAS to work. And maybe it will. Moving Ellerbe they say, may help. We can draft a linebacker. We added Mitchell, he fits the 4-3 scheme. We signed Delmas. Coyle has Dion Jordan from last year, and he will have a greater impact. On offense, we're fitting in more players for Philbin's zone blocking. We picked up a back who can block and catch. We're going to draft some linemen. We'll likely pick up a running back and maybe add a receiver in the later rounds.

Hickey I think, has done a good job of not being heavy-handed and give Philbin's offense and Coyle's defense the best chance of succeeding. He signed or re-signed some cornerstones (Albert, Starks, Grimes) and matched some other players to the coach's scheme. Now, onto the draft.

It's difficult to really say. I was stoked last year when we picked up Ellerbe and Wheeler. I expected maybe 1/4 to half the season would be ramp-up time for the defense to gel, but it just never really happened. Same with Wallace and Tannehill -- it just never really clicked. Add in the injuries to Gibson and Keller, the rookies being a non-factor except for Sturgis's first half of the season, and Dion Jordan's minimal but crucial plays, and the offseason turned out to be quite ineffective on bettering the team overall.

Like last year, I'm also stoked for a lot of the players we signed, but I think analyzing competition, match-ups, and the depth chart will be key. I hope Hickey and Philbin make enough good decisions on who should start and who gets playing time this time around.
