Big Paul is leaving miami

Personally I don't think losing Solai is that big. We could get a true 4-3 DT that fits the defense.

Soliai is a perfect fit for the 4-3 1 Technique. He's strong enough to fight double teams, and quick enough to find the RB and bring him down. And he's been pretty underrated in the pass game when asked to rush.

I'm not sure what you're looking for in a "true" DT considering we already have the 3 technique being occupied by Odrick.

I agree with everything Digital posted in this thread. Soliai should have been our top priority among our own free agents. If we lose him, our identity changes on defense. Suddenly we're more fragile and vulnerable everywhere. That is hardly true of Grimes. Losing him wouldn't have changed our identity. A little cornerback like that on the upside of 30 is not going to be as effective if we are marginal and smaller up front.

Besides, Soliai figures to bounce upward from a somewhat disappointing season while Grimes more often than not will be less effective than 2013.

I was hoping we would secure Soliai for several years and pair him with a quick disruptor in Aaron Donald. If we lose Soliai, suddenly it's going to be shocking that everyone on the defensive front looks closer to average. I think it's a massive gaffe.

Soliai is also on the upside of 30, and it's an up-tempo passing league. Soliai is out there for just over 50% of the plays, Grimes is out there every down. Grimes was clearly the priority target.

I could nitpick at Paul's game, but truthfully he is a rock and we'll miss him. Joseph and Melton are the only free agents that are around his level, and I doubt we're getting one of them. However, I think it's a case where he, or his agent, have been itching for respect and never got that big contract from the Dolphins. Franchising him is an option I would've seriously considered, but it might have resulted in a repeat of the Starks situation.
