As for Tannehill, he’s not in the running right now due to his untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic. Coach Joe Philbin and his staff have made it clear that turnovers will not be tolerated, so for now at least Tannehill will continue his apprenticeship as the No. 3 guy.
The second item was the news that Brian Hartline recently underwent an appendectomy. Hartline’s agent informed my colleague Ben Volin earlier in the spring that his absence from OTA workouts was due to a calf strain. When Hartline’s absences extended to the minicamp, Philbin was asked why he wasn’t at least working on the side, since attendance at the minicamp was mandatory. Philbin’s response was that Hartline was “attending to some personal matters.”

Hartline himself disclosed the surgery in an interview with WQAM last week.

That’s the first time Philbin has been caught in a lie, and that’s troubling. Philbin has demonstrated a great amount of integrity up until now, but if he’s going to be disingenous it puts him in the same troubling category as pretty much every other coach who feels the truth is necessary only when it’s convenient.

The bottom line is that Hartline is expected to be fine by the start of camp, so it’s no big deal. But if it’s no big deal, what was the harm in disseminating the truth? Looks like we’ll start having to take the information coming out of Dolphins camp with a grain of salt. Nothing new there.

I don't see anything wrong with what coach did. It is kind of a personal issue. Maybe he was keeping it classified as he didn't want to air out Brian's surgery until he was ready.

to call him a liar is extreme. how is having appendectomy not a personal issue? or maybe he had a personal issue and the appendectomy came after? who knows, but to flat out call someone a liar bc of this is stupid

How is "attending to some personal matters" (i.e. an appandectomy) lying? Just because the beat writers want to pry into everyone's personal lives as if they were public domain doesn't mean Hartline wasn't attending to personal matters.

Buttholes like this really tick me off. Trying to sensationalize everything for no reason at all.

exactly

Biggane is WAY off base here. That's just stupid. Philbin said it's a personal matter. It was. An appendectomy is not football related. There are actually laws about disseminating peoples' medical records and/or medical history without their approval.

If I were Ben Volin, I would be pissed off at Brian Hartline's agent...but Joe Philbin has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. He did the RIGHT thing, and I don't just mean 'right' meaning the thing that was smartest from a football sense, I mean RIGHT as in it would've been WRONG for Philbin to publicly share Brian Hartline's private, non-football medical issues with the media.

So now Philib is a liar and a terrible coach because he decided to plead the 5th when asked about a players injury?

So what would that make Bilicheat? Who basically lists every player on his squad as "questionable" week in and week out?

its a personal matter until it starts effecting your job requirements...and in hartlines case mandatory mini camps are required...if its volunteer (wink wink) otas no big deal but mandatory stuff i think it should be disclosed...

Glad that everyone seems to be in unison on this front. Biggane has painted himself as a hack. Most sportswriters are, but speaking of lack of integrity . . . Christ.

I'm not going to make some snap judgment about a guy being a hack or whatever based on one incident. But I will say that Biggane probably owes Philbin an apology.

There are people out there admitting that Philbin may not have lied but he didn't tell the whole truth, well HE COULDN'T. There are HIPAA laws in place that prevent him doing that. If I recall my last bit of HR training well enough, Philbin isn't even allowed to intimate publicly that Hartline had a medical procedure at all, or injury, nothing. He said 'personal matter' and that's literally all I believe he's allowed to say.

Yep, HIPPA is a big deal. I've always wondered how sports teams get away with reporting the injury information that they do. I haven't wondered enough to google it though...

that's all you're allowed to say even when you're missing mandatory written in your contract mini camps???
