As for Tannehill, he’s not in the running right now due to his untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic. Coach Joe Philbin and his staff have made it clear that turnovers will not be tolerated, so for now at least Tannehill will continue his apprenticeship as the No. 3 guy.
The second item was the news that Brian Hartline recently underwent an appendectomy. Hartline’s agent informed my colleague Ben Volin earlier in the spring that his absence from OTA workouts was due to a calf strain. When Hartline’s absences extended to the minicamp, Philbin was asked why he wasn’t at least working on the side, since attendance at the minicamp was mandatory. Philbin’s response was that Hartline was “attending to some personal matters.”
Hartline himself disclosed the surgery in an interview with WQAM last week.
That’s the first time Philbin has been caught in a lie, and that’s troubling. Philbin has demonstrated a great amount of integrity up until now, but if he’s going to be disingenous it puts him in the same troubling category as pretty much every other coach who feels the truth is necessary only when it’s convenient.
The bottom line is that Hartline is expected to be fine by the start of camp, so it’s no big deal. But if it’s no big deal, what was the harm in disseminating the truth? Looks like we’ll start having to take the information coming out of Dolphins camp with a grain of salt. Nothing new there.
