Biggest Mistake Of The Wanny/Spielman Era?

Biggest Mistakes

1. Fiedler (from day 1)
2. AJ Feeley trade
3. Gordon trade
4. drafting Fletcher, not drafting Brees
5. the entire Spielman OLine debacle of last year
6. the day of the draft trade with NE (our #2 for their #3)
7. etc...

:yell: :yell: :yell:

Bringing Norv Turner in as OC if Dave was unwilling to give him a QB able to play his offense. Dave either needed to bring in somebody to continue the Gailey offense or give the offense over to a QB better suited to the only sort of offense Norv ever ran. Dave burned two good years where this team could have driven deep into the playoffs.

Looking back the worst move was trading the 2nd for Feeley. I have no idea what they saw in him the nobody else did. The Jets tried to trade for him the season before and wouldn't give up a 4th. We burn a high 2 in another Speilman draft pick robbery.

Griese came into camp late and was injured right? Or was injured after he signed? So he was kinda a wash.

Bingo!!!!!!!!!!! We Have a winner!!!! Exactly what I was thinking. Fiedler and Ray Lucas were brought in to run a Gailey offense which emphasized mobility in the QB position, hence the reason Dan was shown the door. They were not Norv Turner QB's. I actually think that if Gailey never left we would have gone further in 2002 and 2003. They force fed a system onto inadequate QB personell, instead of tayloring the system to to the strengths and limitations of Fiedler. Fiedler fit better in a Chan Gailey offense.

The other event that had profound impact on the franchise during Wannspiel was Wanny not having his cell phone on and therefore missing Spielman's call to finalize the Hasselback trade, 30 minutes too late and he was a Seahawk. :fire:

Jamar Fletcher...

i know it's hindsight, but the following players were chosen in 2001 AFTER fletcher, and before Chambers in round 2:

Michael Bennett
Todd Heap
Reggie Wayne
Algie Crumper
Chad Johnson
Kris Jenkins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maurice Williams
Dominic Raiola

*sigh*

And thats only a small list of all the players we could have gotten, in total.

Especially when you think about the fact that we could have had Anquan Boldin instead of Eddie "I got knocked out & have never seen the field" Moore. Which would have made the Booker trade unneccessary, then maybe we get more draft picks for Ogun. Wanny is a moron, Rick was trying to right a sinking ship in one year....Which is also moronic.

How about what was the one thing they did right?

Do I hear crickets?
Last year draft was actually a good one, as far as potential. Carey will probably be our starting left tackle this year and Rex Hadnot was an absolute steal in the sixth round. Will Poole might be our starting corner for several years to come. Tony Bua will be a special teams stud, if nothing else.

If it is, blame Wayne for not having the balls to axe Wanny when he should have. Rick made a couple of mistakes in my book, but he acted the way he had to act for the most part.

I was thinking about it and I think the biggest mistake of the Wanny/Spielman era was when they let Griese go. I'm not sure whos call it was but in retrospect he has turned into a decent QB for the Bucs. With an improved OL, which I feel we are finally starting to see, Griese may have been a decent QB for us. His lackluster season with us prob had a lot to do with our crappy OL play. Although I beleive he throws a few too many picks, he may have been an upgrade to what we have on the roster now. What do you think?

..Bringing in Ray Lucas
..Drafting Jamar Fletcher
..Trading our 2nd to the Pat's
..Drafting Eddie Moore instead of Anquan Bolden
..Throwing 3 straight downs in the Pat's game in 2002 costing us division title
..trade for Feeley
..trade for Gordon
..NOT going after a proven QB
..staying for too long
..Trading up to get Vernon Carey(they got conned)
..letting Griese go
..Wanny: not being hardnosed and getting in the players face when he needed to, to much of a "player's coach"

....thats all I can think of for now..but im sure there is more.

The biggest mistake was Huizenga's giving them a do or die year, because that's what made them make all those desperate moves to win NOW, which mortgaged the future of the franchise.

Bingo. You never give people a do or die year.
