Billy Turner - Only 3rd Round Pick in the NFL that is still Unsigned - WHY?

Maybe it's because they haven't decided if he is going to play guard or tackle, the money would be different.

Funny enough, this might be the issue.

Turner played OT and was listed as a OT in the draft. So I'm sure him and his agent are pushing for OT money when Fins have him as a G.

Not sure what difference in money is but it counts for something.

No one is really WORRIED about this. Just curious why the Dolphins have the only 3rd round pick in the entire NFL that has yet to sign this year.

Not sure why it is curious though, it isn't a race to get draft picks signed. Whether all the picks signed the day after the draft in May or July 23rd, the result is exactly the same. Even if Miami ends up being the last team to sign all their draft picks, but Turner misses no time, is that some sort of black eye for the team?

It's the offset language.

Being a 3rd round pick, the "next team pays rest of guaranteed money" is big because he might not make the team. (with the disaster OL I doubt this, but I'm sure that is what the agent is telling him).

So sure, Turner might get say $2 guaranteed by the Fins, but gets cut after season 1 if offset language is present and no other team picks him up then he is out $.

That is why most will ask for bigger upfront money due to offset language.

You may have just miss typed, but either way I will go ahead and correct your mistake. No Turner would NOT be out of any more money with off set language added, unless another team DID pick him up. Offset language only applies to players getting paid twice for the same year of work of guaranteed money. If a player is cut he still gets all of his guaranteed money if another team doesn't pick him up, with or without offset language.

That may have been what you were trying to say, but it seemed as if you were saying he would lose guaranteed money if he signed an offset language clause and got cut. Which isn't true.

who cares? it will be done by camp

I wonder if the lad can play Center!!!

Didn't realize position matter that much with these rookie contracts anymore. Thought the slot paid what the slot paid +/- a minor incentive here or there. Understood the only big concerns were is the contract fully guaranteed and the offset language. Didn't realize the $ difference between OT & OG would be worth not signing yet. Maybe so...

The money is no different. This is probably just an anomaly, I even doubt that offset language is holding it up. It might be a matter of guaranteed money more than anything or it may have been a simple he had some other issue. Nothing to see here. He will be signed.
I mean we are not talking a lot of money or risk here financially if we end up cutting a third round pick early. It sucks to waste a pick but offset language really doesn't help a team very much since they can always sign a minimum contract guy and that's about the money we are speaking of under the cap.
There may be more to it but its probably just a coincidence.

Similar draft pick from last year had this contract 5/9/2013: Signed a four-year, $3.075 million contract. The deal included a $697,000 signing bonus. 2014: $515,000, 2015: $650,000, 2016: $733,000, 2017: Free Agent.
So the only year offset language would help at all is if we cut him basically year one, after that its about the value of a minimum contract that we would owe.

The only argument that could be coming from their camp is possibly guaranteed money and in reality there is no precendent or reason for him to get any more than about 700,000 or so guaranteed.
Last year this was Dallas Thomas's contract.
6/14/2013: Signed a four-year, $2.846 million contract. The deal included a $606,376 signing bonus. 2014: $520,000, 2015: $610,000, 2016: $705,000, 2017: Free Agent

He's waiting for Jeff Ireland to come back to do the negotiation. :)

Maybe because it is only June. If he is not signed by training camp then I'll start to care.

Maybe Turner's Dad is telling him things about the contract to have issues with since he is an NFL vet. =)

As I understand it the player is still learning how to do his signature. His agent has assured the Dolphins that he will in fact master this complex exercise sometime before training camp starts.
