Bowles to be released from contract, won't join Philbin's staff

This is a little tongue-in-cheek, but essentially what I think likely occurred:

I love a little tongue in the cheeks!

I disagree that Todd hasn't produced good results. The guy has not been given a lot of talent to work with on the back end. He has some athletic guys, but he mostly has had to deal with players that do not have good ball skills and do not have good instincts. He also had to deal with a defensive coordinator that would constantly ask his players to do things that are part of their weaker aspects. For example, playing Sean Smith in zone coverage so much instead of press man.

You know what though. Despite all that, this team did improve from allowing opponents to have a 103.8 passer rating through the first 5 games of the year to allowing opponents a 73.3 passer rating over the final 11 games of this season. That is a monumental improvement over the course of the season, and Todd Bowles should get a lot of credit for that improvement.

Did he not get any talent or did he do nothing with what he had? V.Davis, S.Smith, C.Clemons, W.Allen, N.Jones, Y.Bell, T.Culver, N.Caroll.... are hardly untalented. There are alot worse secondaries in the league getting more out of their players. Some of the guys we cut seem to have some decent success in other places and T.Bowles I'm sure had some in put in who got cut....J.Allen - Houston, C.Crocker -Cinci to name a couple.

I think its funny though that people are coming down on Bowles now that he left. As if we ever kept stats on secondary coaching. People dont blame secondary coaches for bad defensive plays, they blame the coordinator so if you want to come down on Bowles do the same for Mike Nolan who was pretty much non existent the first 3 quarters of the season. Barely any pass rush, big plays, players out of assignment. This is not Bowles's fault. And for the record...Vontae is a good corner back, and so is Jimmy Wilson. Maybe we should blame the linebackers coach right? Secondarys tend to look and play better when front seven players do their job. This NRA guy is head over heels with hating on Bowles for absolutely no reason. I dont like Sean Smith and I dont like Rashad Jones at FS... Yeremiah Bell is good but old. We have huge issues at safety. Blame Ireland for personnel. The guy Bowles came in and save face for the dolphins beating the Jets, losing by 3 to NE(still a lose) blowing out buffalo, and this is how you talk about the guy? Get over it man.

I don't see what the love fest was with Bowles, he coached a secondary that three years to develop Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, failed to develop Clemons and Jones and the year before last couldn't catch a cold let alone intercept a football. Besides the Raiders interview no one is pounding down the door for interviews.

+1

It is interesting on how all this played out. Makes you question (if you didn't already) all the reports about McCoy not wanting Bowles having a piece of the decision in bringing him in? Also, let's not discount the possibility that Bowles may have asked for his contract to be ended so he could seek employment with another team. Maybe he didn't want to stay and be tied to Philbin. Just saying there is a lot of ?? that surround this. But ultimately it's probably best that Philbin gets a full fresh start to pick his own coaching staff.
