The funny thing is that the same people who believe the NFL is rigged also believe that the NFL is incompetent. It literally is impossible for the incompetent to have a system in place to rig games and go it right and make sure no parties talk.

Is it possible for a rouge ref to make calls effecting an outcome for personal gain? Yes. We know that happened in the NBA. But until there is proof it has ever happened in the NFL, it would be nothing more than speculation with no evidence. I would side more on incompetence being the villain here.

Same thing you see elsewhere. Conspiracy buffs will claim that a man is completely senile and too dimwitted to get to the bathroom by himself... while he simultaneously runs a transnational consortium of corruption.

I'm like... umm... which one? It can't be both.

Well, consider this...until it was found out in the NBA...it was as it is in the NFL...you had those wondering wtf...and those who refused to acknowledge any real possibility that it would/could happen...

In the 'real world', the incompetence shown would show you the door to the unemployment line.

NFL officials are evaluated every week and on every play.

But... the league makes almost all of their moves in the offseason. That's when poor performers are not retained. All high level officials organizations work like this.

The flip side of this was today's big call in the Chiefs game. Toney was CLEARLY offsides, but the Chiefs are screaming that he should have gotten a warning.

Pretty funny.

"Let us play the game" they say. Reid and Mahomes both ripped on the refs for what was a 100% legit call. Crybaby asses should be ripping on their WR that lined up with his foot ahead of the ball. It shouldn't be the refs' job to tell you every play that you're right or wrong with what you're doing...you've been lining up for how many years? If a defender was lined up that way, and got a sack, and no flag was thrown, they'd be throwing a fit about the non-call.

But the thing is, many were surprised it was called...because many times, it isn't, because of subjectivity or other reasons. That call should be made every time, as well as other penalties. Sub-standard officiating, for whatever reason, is the root cause of their reaction.

FWIW, NFL Live showed three or four other plays where Toney was lined up in the neutral zone and another where he and another wide receiver were in the neutral zone. None of those resulted in a penalty.

Yes, Toney was definitely offsides on the play in question. But it does beg the question as to why it had been called differently earlier and why Toney might have felt that it was acceptable to do so with this crew.

The problem here is in the consistency of rule enforcement. I think it would have been easier to swallow if it had been established earlier.

I can't answer that, but in general... most officials organizations see a churn each year, and the men with the worst scores get dropped (as well as some of the older guys).

The officials groups don't publicize their moves, so those hoping to see ex officials publicly shamed won't get the satisfaction they are looking for, but I can tell you that competition for these spots (and playoff games) is brutal at every level.

This one is always controversial... how far is 'too far'? And how many warnings does a player get?
Add in the fact that every coaching staff seems to have one designated chirper to continually harass the sideline officials and you have a muddy situation.

Back when I was working, our group tended to work with the WRs in the first quarter, then clamp down, but you are always left with the question of inches...

I thought the tv rules guy had a pretty good take on this... if you've seen that.

I was over at my neighbors house the night the Eagles played the Bills (Eagles won). He is a lifelong Eagles fan and is about 80 years old. We watched the 2nd half of that ballgame and he is sitting there with me enjoying a bourbon, and he starts complaining to me how the refs always have it out for the Eagles and that the NFL and media hate the Eagles and they always get screwed on every call...blah...blah...blah....

I am just staring at him to the point he feels a bit uneasy and asks me "what"......"don't you agree"? I then gave him a lecture about the Fins / Eagles game and for him to never complain to me about referees and the Eagles every again (all with a smile on our faces). When I mentioned the Fins game, he kind of looked down and said...."well that one game was the exception"!

Bottom line, all teams fans feel the same way. Even those we perceive as being on the receiving end of favorable calls will flip the next time it doesn't go there way.

Being a fan is hard work......

They don’t release the names of officials that aren’t retained but it’s pretty easy to see which officials aren’t by looking through reffing crew lists. Footballzebras.com tracks that and I believe there was a 12 official turnover this past season — that was the largest turnover in 10 seasons. I think four of those stated after the year that they were retiring and those four had all been assigned playoff games, so I would assume that is true. So up to 8 weren’t retained. NFL.com states that there are 121 referees, so if 8 are not retained that means that 14 out of 15 are retained.
