Brandon Gibson & Dustin Keller: Part of our future?

I hope Gibson comes back healthy, he is a complete first down monster. He touches the ball it's a first down every time, and he's far more versatile that you think you first watch him. He doesn't pop off the screen, but you see him during a whole game and you see how he eats on any corners with different moves, speed, strength, clean routes.

I didn't expect him to be this good, he was our best wr before the injury.

Actually I believe you are right. Torn Patella Tendon. recovery time is about the same as an ACL tear

My understanding is that it was the Patella Tendon not ACL for Gibson? So which one is it?

like to think about the return of Armon Binns as well considering he was slotted as the #4 before the injury. Healthy bodies and an improved OL would do wonders for this offense as is

yes but it is more than likely we will deal with some major injuries next season as well, so we need better deoth than we had this year..

Why wouldn't Gibson be back? He was playing well when he got hurt in New England. Keller has been debated a lot on this site. If he's healthy, which no one really knows if he will be, I'd definitely sign him to another 1 year deal to prove he can come back and play. If he is hurt then there's no point.

If he's healthy and signs a 1 year deal I still look to upgrade the position. Unless Egnew/Sims show they can line up opposite of Clay and kick some ass, the position needs to be upgraded.
I already gave up on Egnew. Sims is only good for blocking and an occasional catch. In other words, they need to get another tight end. Clay is more of a weapon than a true tight end.

Gibson's ratio of TDs to receptions in his last year in St. Louis was sick, and we saw why. Some guys just 'get' football and Gibson seemed to be one of those guys. He just had a sense of how to get open and seldom drop it. Patellar tendon should heal up 'good-as-new' and I expect he should be back to form.
Rishard Matthews is a nice player but he's not Brandon Gibson. His absence was felt, bigtime, I'm sure by the Dolphins offense.

In the Jets game, for most of it, you were down to Wallace and Matthews and Marlon Moore for Tanny to throw to. This probably should've been discussed more as a factor in Miami losing that game. Marlon Moore is a really good 4th or 5th WR. Anything more than that and you're not going far.

I would love to see these guys come back and fulfill the promise that they showed in limited opportunity last year...but I'm worried that neither would be particularly effective. It's said that players aren't truly 100% until the 2nd year after the severe knee injury, but I'm not sure if that axiom is now outdated by the wonders of modern science.

Do you think our new GM will just want to cut bait on both those guys? I know that Keller is a FA again, anyway, unless I'm mistaken. If he can show health I think we'd be crazy not to at least give him a chance to do something, an extremely incentive-laden contract that would reward him if he's healthy to a point similar or better than what we offered him last season.

As far as Gibson goes, I'm a bit torn. On one hand, he showed great ability and smarts by learning to be an excellent slot-receiver even though he hadn't done it historically. On the other hand, I'm still pissed he fell down for no reason after catching that ball from Tannehill on that 4th and 10 vs Baltimore. The ball hit him in stride and he should've kept right on going to the house for a sick Dolphins victory. Instead, he just fell right down and didn't even get into FG range. I hate when guys fall down for no reason just so they can focus on catching the ball. I'm probably being too harsh because if he would've dropped it, then the game is over right there and then, but still. Part of a receiver's job is to run with the ball after they catch it, not just fall down in order to secure the catch. That's bush-league.

Anyway, now that I've vented, I think the positives of Gibson this year far outweigh that negative, and if he's healthy then he shouldn't be cut, IMO.

Gibson will be back. I think when Lazor looks at film he will identify the need for a 2nd deep thread opposite to Wallace. The need to teach Gibson and Hartline to get more YAC. The requirement of dumping Thomas and using Miller right and of course changes on the OL.
Clay has done a remarkable job this season and has really improved. Unless Keller is leaps and bounds better in blocking I don't think Keller will be back. As a pass catching TE Clay has shown plenty.

I'd be surprised if Keller is back but I'd like to see him have a shot on a minimum contract. We do need to draft a playmaking TE to complement Clay, though. We are just wasting time with Egnew and Sims.

You're selling Matthews short by comparing what Gibson did in his 4th and 5th seasons in the league to what Matthews did as a 2nd year player in his 1st real playing time. I believe Gibson will be back, and will be a valuable player for the Fins, but IMHO Matthews has a higher ceiling.

Agree. If Keller wants to give it a go, he's not going to cost anything. It's a no-risk, possible reward situation for the Fins, and at the least he's a good veteran presence to have in camp.

I would like to see Keller come back. before the injury he was a better deep seam threat than Clay. He became Tanny's Blanket. Egnew is not a TE and we dont use him correctly.
