Brandon Gibson Looks To Be Odd Man Out

I think Miami keeps 6 receivers on the final roster this year, Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews, Jarvis and Hazel. If Hazel struggles and Binns returns healthy Binns could have a shot.

I'd say binns is pretty much gone already barring injury...they may like that size in the slot some but he's not gonna defeat much coverage or provide much red zone

I don't see how he'd make it any higher than as 5th wr type and with clay being a heavy part of the obvious pass downs package what good is that to us on game day...

Unless this teams gonna run an awful lot of 5 man protects which would have been a flat disaster in 2013....hell we couldn't execute max protect play action 8 and 7 man protects long enough against 5 and 4 man pressures in 2013

I'd base whether or not I kept 5 or 6 wrs on how the oline looked in camp and preseason...and well whether someone deserved is as in was one of my best 53...last year given the oline play and issues they kept the right number of wrs...especially considering with clay here you will always keep at least 3 tight ends

I cant see the benefit in cutting Gibson at this point...unless he shows up to camp and hes clearly not healthy. Landry is going to have to prove himself to beat out Gibson and Matthews anyways. Also, given the fact that we have Hartline and Gibson coming off injuries, Im not sure its wise to cut one of our top 5 receivers to save a couple million bucks.

This was the question I posted on this forum as soon as Landry was picked: "what does this mean for Brandon Gibson?" I love Gibson as much as everyone else, but here are the facts: Miami drafted a SLOT receiver in the 2nd round (Gibson was Miami's slot receiver last year); WR was not a need (yet Miami drafted one anyway b/c they couldn't pass up such a great prospect); Gibson is coming off a serious injury; and cutting Gibson would save Miami some cap dollars.

In other words, it wouldn't shock me at all if Gibson were cut now that Landry is aboard. If Miami kept Gibson, how would they work their WR rotation? You know that Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson would be the starters. This means that Landry would probably be the 4th WR they'd have to squeeze in with Gibson. I guess that's possible, but I'm thinking that Gibson may be released...especially if Landry comes up big during training camp/pre-season.

I say there is less than 1% chance Gibson gets released if he is healthy. Let the rookie see if he is made for the pro game, before we start cutting players. Gibson was our best WR I think if we were thinking of getting rid of him he would have some trade value. But make no mistake he will be a dolphin this year. Nothing wrong with having 4 starters, one will always get hurt at some point.

This really is the time of year for crazy posts huh?

Has anyone considered if Brian Hartline is worth trading to a team like Cleveland? Im not advocating for it but it seems possible given our depth and their lack of thereof. Does anyone know Hartline's cap number for the next 2 years?

I thought Gibson played well last year. I can understand cutting him if he cant return to form after injury, but cutting a decent WR to save a couple million dollars? I'm not so sure about that. I see Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Landry as the top 4, with the rest fighting it out for #5.

I AGREE 100% Gibson was coming on last season and playing great ball before the injury , And Matthews was catching pretty good away from his body , catching with his hands and you dont see alot of receivers catching with hands , even with the contract Matthews has he is young . and from what i saw was getting better each game , so i see Wallace , Hartline , Gibson, Landry and Matthews as our WRs going into this season , but theres always a chance that one of the 2 that was injured wont be ready to go by the season and we may have to start them on the injury list , but just because we drafted a Good WR dosent mean we have to get rid of a up and coming WR like Matthews , but if the injury looks to take effect on him to where he cant preform as good or better than last year then we could cut or stash on the injury list till we can see what we have .

We better not, he was Tanney's only reliable redzone threat...well besides clay, but I thought Gibson seemed to be the wr Tannehill was most comfortable with. Guy has great hands. Although I will concede he has a spotty injury past.

Let's not over-state Gibson's redzone abilities. He had 3 touchdowns in 7 games. Two of them came in Week 6 vs. Buffalo and then one came in Week 7 vs. NE. Obviously 5 games he did not sniff the endzone.

He was definitely developing chemistry, but that was pre-knee surgery. I know everyone wants to assume he's the next Adrian Peterson, but the likelihood of him being 100% into the 2014 season is low. I'm glad the team had enough sense to make contingency plans by drafting Landry.

Unrated point player always get hurt during camp a veteran wr on a tolerable contract is a great bargaining chip .

Everyone last year was saying we are SET, SET, SET at WR and look how far in the season that lasted. We are set for this year and can plan to move wallace in 2015. Someone will need a WR and will be willing to give us a good player in exchange before it is all said and done, too.

You. Never. Have. Enough. Skill. Position. Offensive. Players. Burn that thought into your heads.

funny you'd say that since only one sentence earlier you suggested getting rid off Mike Wallace

we'd have to eat 4.1 million if we traded (or cut) him this year. we can realistically get out of this deal as soon as next year.

The only way Gibson is the odd man out is if he isn't fully recovered from his injury or if he just doesn't look like the same player. He was clearly Tannehill's favorite receiver and his most reliable receiver before going down with injury last season.

That said, I love all of this competition we are bringing in at a position that has been sorely neglected during the Jeff Ireland era. The idea that Matthews is safe because he is only making $600,000 is ridiculous. He is definitely one of the guys who needs to bring his A game during camp in the preseason.

Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline are safe. From there it's a battle, with Landry, Gibson and Matthews on the inside track for earning the next 3 spots. In this Bill Lazor offense I wouldn't be surprised if he kept a 6th guy . . . which is where a return specialist like Damian Williams or a tall redzone type of threat like Stephen Williams can possibly get in.

This doesn't mean a guy like Hazel won't have an eventual impact, we are going to place guys on the practice squad and develop them. If a guy like Landry shows off #2 ability this year, then a guy like Hartline, who has a more cuttable number next year, could face some challenges an then a guy like Hazel could earn his way on the team.

Still, I looking forward to the WR position battles in camp / preseason more than anything else. Should be fun.
