Via Twitter: "Omar Kelly: RT "@becker1313: Is Brett Brackett still flashing at all?" » That dude is in the witness protection program. They are hiding him big time."

Why would the Dolphins hide an extremely athletic rookie TE (former WR) like Brackett? Do you think there is any validity to this theorem? Would they potentially save him for special packages again the Pats? Anyone have any input or heard anything about this?

Omar is theorizing the Phins want to hide him so they can stash him on the P-squad. If other teams get limited looks of him, they are less likely to claim him (in theory).

<sigh>

Bunch of Bull.

If a guy who is playing a position that you need (TE) because all but one guy (who's not that great either) sucks big time, why would you be worried about it and not just trash one of the players and keep him on the 53?

It's ridiculous. I can understand the move in a position that you have too many good players in, but at TE, where you have a need for more dynamic players?

:rolleyes2:

So they would rather not test the talent in preseason games, but instead hope to develop on the practice squad? I wonder why they wouldn't they give a player (who seemingly/reportedly) could fill a huge hole as playmaking vertical TE threat a shot?

My thoughts exactly. It just does not add up. And the kid supposedly has talent, the only thing I could picture is special packages using 2 TE sets being saved for the Pats game and beyond

yeah it's the PS argument. I know the Packer coaching staff was livid when we signed Ty Culver and Joey Haynos (both guys they wanted to stash on PS)

I can see why they are trying to hide Brackett; He's 6'6 240 and has 4.4 speed (ok probably not that fast, probably 4.6), but he is raw as hell. He went to Penn State as a QB, moved to WR (ironically, because of Pat Devlin committing to Penn State), but grew too big to be a WR.

Honestly if they like him that much, no other TE has separated themselves, and Charles Clay is gonna be FB/H-Back/Whatever, why not keep him? He went to PSU so he knows how to block.

Of course, the John Nalbone thing might be screwin with them

Remember, that's Omar Kelly's theory. Omar hasn't always proven himself to be the best judge of football. It could be that Brackett is raw as an onion, and they feel the other TE's can help them more now, and his upside isn't high enough to keep on the team this year.

Funny you mention the John Nalbone thing... little unknown fact is Brackett and Nalbone attended the same high school (Lawrence High School) and actually played football together. Only reason I know this is because I played with Brett and attended Lawrence High School as well. Hence my curiosity with what the heck his deal is! Kid is a freak athlete.

Overview
Brackett is a big wide receiver who has seen a lot of playing time for the Nitts, but was never a productive receiver until his senior season, when he caught 39 passes for 525 yards and 5 TDs.
Strengths
Big bodied WR who might work well as a TE in the NFL. Has the frame to add bulk and is already an accomplished blocker as a WR. Shows excellent effort blocking in space, on run and pass plays. Has a bit of a nasty streak as a blocker. Has tremendous hands and long arms to pluck the ball away from his body. Uses his body well to shield defenders from the pass. Not afraid to go across the middle or do the dirty work. Outstanding person and student off the field.
Weaknesses
Too limited athletically to play WR in the NFL (i.e., he's pretty slow). He doesn't have much burst out of his stance and lumbers a bit as a route-runner. Will need to move to TE and add another 15-25 pounds of functional bulk.
Projection
Brackett was never used much in the receiving game at PSU, but he's an interesting project worth a late selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. He's got the size, length, and demeanor to be an effective receiving TE in the short term, and a nasty blocking TE in the future.
