He was the head coach of the Eagles when he said that, and he said that to put all the heat on himself for releasing Cris Carter. Cris had a drug problem that no one knew about at the time, and to deflect all kinds of probing questions he put it all on himself to shield Cris.

Most ppl think Buddy was being an azz, but in fact he was just being himself and being a total class act by protecting Cris from the press and public scrutiny about his drug problem.

Obviously he was paying Chris Chambers a compliment, because he only released Cris becuase he had a major drug problem at the time.

You hit it right on the head. ESPN did a special on CC the other day, and he praised Buddy Ryan for how he dealt with the situation. He siad no coach ever protected him like Buddy did, and with out him taking the blame for letting a all pro WR go, no one would have given CC a chance to shake his drug problem that only his family and Buddy knew of. He was also one of the best defensive minds and motivators in his day.
