Caleb Sturgis injures groin again

To be fair, If you are going to give us his struggles why not show when his kicks tied or won the game for us

Carpenter made his professional debut on September 7, 2008 (Week 1) against the Jets, going 2/2 on PAT's (the team attempted no FG's). He kicked his first professional field goal the following week against the Cardinals, finishing the game with 1/1 FG's and 1/1 PAT's.

On November 30, 2008, Carpenter set the Dolphins' rookie record for most consecutive field goals made with 11.[7]

Carpenter was awarded the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for November 2008, for converting all eight of his field goal attempts during the month, including five from a distance longer than 40 yards.[8]

According to NFL stats, Carpenter finished the 2009 season going 25 for 28 on field goals with a long of 52 yards. He also finished 40 for 40 on extra point attempts.

Carpenter made his first Pro Bowl in 2009. San Diego Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding did not play due to injury, and Carpenter took his spot.

As of the end of the 2010 season, Carpenter is the second most accurate kicker in NFL history, behind Kaeding.[9]

On December 5, 2010, Carpenter made a 60-yard field goal in a home game against the Cleveland Browns. This was the longest field goal in Miami Dolphins history.

On September 23, 2012, Carpenter missed a 47-yard field goal in a home game against the New York Jets in overtime which would have sealed victory for Miami in overtime. Carpenter also missed a field goal from a similar distance earlier in the game. Miami would ultimately go on to lose 23-20 to New York in overtime.

On November 25, 2012, his 27th birthday, he hit a 43-yard field goal to win against the Seattle Seahawks in overtime to win 24-21 at home. Later on December 22, he was placed on Injured Reserve. Former Charger Nate Kaeding was signed to replace him.

On August 14, 2013, Carpenter was released by the Miami Dolphins.[10] Before his release, he was battling rookie Caleb Sturgis for the Dolphins' starting pla

Out of all of that all you do is mention the game vs. the Jets where he could've won it for Miami and then you mention the win vs. Seattle. Kicking the game-winning FG with the score tied is obviously different than doing so when you're down. I remember he kicked a GW-FG vs. Green Bay a few years back. I think that game was tied too.

Point is that Miami can't be blamed for cutting him loose when he failed more times than he needed to. Him resurrecting himself in Buffalo has nothing to do with the Dolphins.

Because we didnt cut him for winning games, we cut him because his failures directly led to losses. And those failures happened consistently year after year.

Hes a kicker not a quarterback, this team shouldnt deal with the good and the bad. Carpenter played a position that is relatively easy to replace and not overly important. He couldnt do his job for an entire season so we correctly decided to try and find someone who could.

Every kicker will run into a bad stretch from time to time, he has won more games than he lost.....if you want to bring in competition in training camp that's fine but when you draft a kicker in the 5th round their will be no competition as long as the drafted kicker shows up healthy its his job....replacing him was a boneheaded move, Carpenter showed over his 5 years that he can do the job, his worst yr he had only a 73% Accuracy rate but he also was called on to kick 8 times over 50 yds in windy stadiums like NE, Buffalo and NY which he killed his percentage....When a team has much more pressing needs you don't use a pick on a luxury..Now if the team was a playoff team and he cost them games or kept them from advancing in the playoffs then I would agree with that argument but that wasn't the case....

Lets wait and see how easy it going to be replace him....he was solid, young and made big kicks and was only going to get better.

You're forgetting the fact that Carp was AWFUL on kickoffs. He almost never had a touchback. Sturgis is good at booting it out of the end zone. Granted the rules have changed, but Im pretty sure Carp still sucked at getting touchbacks even after they changed the yard line.

Carp KO to TB rate is 60% Sturgis 60.9

My god all this talk about carpenter is making my eyes bleed. The dude was terrible his last two years in a Fins uni. He deserved to be released. With that being said Sturgis is equally as bad. Just sign a FA kicker and be done with this dude.

That's not terrible his last two yrs.....

I think Carpenterr was set to make $5 or $6 million dollars if the Fins didn't cut him. That's way too much for a .500 team to pay a kicker. That money was needed else where on the roster.

The fact that we can have a debate over how many games per season he lost for us is indicative that he needed to go. Sure, a kicker can have a bad game or two, but they usually dont get a chance to have a bad month. Which was what was happening with Carpenter.

Kickers have 1 real job: make field goals. If we cant rely on him to do that consistently on a week by week basis, why bother? And for the record, because you brought up windy stadiums and what not, the games with the misses i mentioned were: @ Oakland, vs Cleveland, vs Buffalo, vs Houston, @ Cleveland(in September), vs New York, @ Arizona, and @ Cincinnati(beginning of October). The "versus" are home games. Not exactly a lot of sleet and snow in those games. But even if there were, id expect him to make enough kicks to help this team win. If he couldnt, then i would expect this team to bring in a kicker who could.

As for the draft point: 1) The draft isnt for filling needs, its for getting the best talent available and 2) Jeff Ireland was still the one making the selection, so it probably would have been a bust anyways.

I have no idea if Sturgis is the answer(though its worth noting Sturgis had a 76.5% completion rating). But i know Carpenter wasnt. At least not anymore. Any potential he showed early in his career was pretty much dried up at the end. He lost his confidence. It happens. We gave him 3 years to build it back up and he couldnt. We needed to part ways. As well, if Sturgis doesnt show hes worthy of the job right now, then i fully support cutting him and bringing in his replacement. Why? Because again: im not wasting my time with a kicker.

i'm shocked this guys hurt again...nothing like a built in excuse for misses from 40 yards in clutch moments...i flat out don't trust this kicker

You guys are funny if you really think he's going to be cut. Get with the program.

i don't think he's gonna be cut...i'm just prepared for the keebler elf to miss clutch kicks and give me's...

LOL

This is how I pictured Strugis incurring his injury.

Along with the missed kicks i'd say this was the main reason he was replaced. I remember the discussion about finding a replacement even before we drafted Strugis. No one wanted to pay that much for a kicker and the kid was our solution. 5 th round rookie salary vs 5 mil a year. Sounded like a smart move at the time especially with his strong performance at UF his senior year.

That out of bounds kick off vs Baltimore with the game tied that lead to their winning field goal certainly made me question the logic.

I went to Training Camp the other day and 5 players appeared noticeably bigger. (Just an observation from the stands - no insider access)
- Cam Wake - looks huge
- AJ Francis - is up to 330 lbs - massive (he could take John Jerry on at Golden Corral and that is high praise)
- Dion Jordan - put on 22 lbs and it isn't all in his shoulders - he's filled out - he ain't built like JT anymore
- Michael Thomas - looks pretty big
- Caleb Sturgis - bigger butt or tighter pants

Holy crap yeah he does!

It was after that kickoff that Sturgis had a horrible October. The rest of his season was good, but he really struggled during that October stretch. That's partially why I think Sturgis will bounce back this year. He had a mental and physical challenge as a rookie and managed to fight his way through it and right the ship.

Well Jordan isn't built like JT anymore because he took PEDS thus the suspension lol
