Camp report day 5 night practice.

Something about that guy just says "I'm a liability".

I agree.

A couple things I have noticed in just about every report this week are (in laymens terms): McKinney sucks, Tillman sucks, Berlin sucks, Whitley sucks.

Glad to see Gus grabbing the bull by the horns. He seems like he's really taking control based on your and Ozzie's reports.

has Tillman been running with the second team now that Lance is there?

From the combined reports of Nasty, Ozzy and Dolphin 2005 it doesnt sound like Frerotte is grabbing the bull by the horns, maybe somewhat lower

camp was awesome last night, everyyhing was so organized seemed only seconds between drills. Ricky looked good. JT taunted Vernon Carey after smoking him a couple times and that got the crowd cheering. It was also nice seeing some of the finheaven contingent there Jamester, finvinsible among others.

Here's my take on Feeley. He's again learning a new offense-which works to his defense. But from what we noticed last year and evidentally what OZZY and others are saying is still the case, his problems have nothing to do with arm strength, but are all mental.

When a play is called the QB is naturally gonna have either a designed or expected primarary receiver in mind for the play. The route of the receivers though are probably designed with alternatives to what the defense gives him. So just because the play is designed with a primarary receiver (either from the coaches, or in the QB's own mind) doesn't necessarily mean the defense facing that receiver is ideal for the play called. That's why it is crucial for the QB to go through his reads and check down to the open man.

Feeley doesn't do this well. He seems bent on getting the ball to the primarary irregardless of the coverage. Almost as if he doesn't know the progression of his reads per play. This does come with reps, but also film study and actually recognizing YOURSELF the tendency to lock-on too early.

That's my biggest gripe against Feeley, he just seems like a dumb-arse at times. He should be spending more time than anyone in the film room. But have we EVER read anything of his study, being obsessive with it, you know like ZT. I know, it doesn't necessarily mean it ain't so .......but you'd think one beat writer would pick up on it.
Some other things that bother me with Feeley are his Quick-decision making skills. His (need to make a quick decision) seem borne out of desperation rather than preparation. And yes, you can plan for the worst case per play, it takes knowing down and distance and a general strategic mindedness. Again, something AJ seems clueless with at times.

And finally I question his toughness at times. I know , I know pain is sometimes difficult to mask. But I played a little receiver under Johnny Majors and one thing I distinctly remember him teaching our QB's (Tony Robinson at the time) was NEVER, EVER show confusion in your body language after plays. You know, where a QB shrugs his shoulders while looking at the coach between plays. Like, "What's the play, or Whatta I do". That would send the coach in a tirade! To me showing pain has the same effect on the opposition. This was something Fiedler was MUCH, MUCH better in at masking. While Fiedler lacked arm strength for the outside throws (Which should have only been called to the short side of the field for him) his game-manship, to me seems superior to AJ's.

The bottomline is I hope the things like not seeming to know his progression, or check-offs will work themselves out through the pre-season with reps. I am worried that he's forming negative habits that he himself may not even notice, (making it incumbent upon the coaching staff to point out and drill out of him). I also give him the benefit of the doubt for learning the offense etc. But the things that are more nature than nurtured (or coached-repititious) may ultimately doom him as a solid QB.

In the end, I'm a never say die dolfan and root for anyone at any position for the 'Fins to be the best and bring us to the second undefeated season!

Feeley's always had that problem.

Yeah although it is conflicting reports, one day he is not locking on, the next he is. Part of it could be the lack of familiarity, but I think we all can agree that he needs to fix that or he will be riding pine.

Many inexperienced qbs lock on, as do many that dont have a grasp on teh system. Either way it is a mental issue and camp and preseason will tell what AJ's mental make up is truly like. Yes I want AJ to win the job, I have no faith in Frerrotte. If gus wins the job, i will pull for him 100%, I just dont like what I have seen from him in the past, so I dont have a warm and fuzzy feeling. If AJ proves he isnt starting material, then all the draft a qb pundits will be proven right. I still think it is way too early to tell.

Roth is starting to sound like a bust! i hope not

wow, that was unexpected, I disagree, did you listen to coaches after practice comment? I coulda swore he praised Roth for playing two positions.. for injured Seau on the first team and wslb (I think) with the second tream.

Good post.

All I have to say on feeley is we have a coach now. That is what everyone seems to think. In the end if saban starts him, and Feeley continues to "Lock-on" then its' Saban's fault for putting him in there isn't it?

You think Saban is going to make that mistake? If Gus can't beat out a "lock-on" QB, then he might have to...

glad to see mcmichael still having an awesome camp.

not too many people can handle jt but sounds like carey is a big improvement

Yes, but the same OL that can't handle JT handles Roth easily. I guess he might not be the beast I hoped from the start. Fair enough, he's a rookie. Maybe he will just be very good for now. That's not a knock on Roth, I just had impossible hopes I guess. Still might improve during the summer too!

Keep in mind, Feeley is bad at practice, as the story goes and also, it's TC. Aren't they more concerned with making and completing the throw from the play called then with checking off to their 3rd and 4th options? I mean if this was for the season I'd be concerned, it's TC, the first week no less, and it's a career bad practice(r).

Let's see what happens starting at the HOF game.
