Can Anyone tell me why we passed on Rodgers?

I think the biggest factor is simply because by bringing a talented back in, you give the back time to develop. By the time you draft a QB you have a strong back, which makes a rookie QB's life alot easier. Where as a stable QB, doesn't make as big a difference on a rookie RB. Not to mention not many QBs would develop without a good RB.

I will first start off saying I like Ronnie and am glad we have him.

However, I personally wanted Mike Williams or Aaron Rodgers at #2.

Simple reason, Rodgers is gonna be a stud and better then Smith. Smith passed Rodgers only due to combines, before that Rodgers was a clear #1. Not taking anything away from Smith, he will be good too. He was justa combine hero.

I felt that getting Rodgers was a better idea only because I knew Ricky would be back. If he didn't we now had a 2nd rounder. JJ Arrington may have fallen to our spot at the time or we could have traded up to get him. Also the RB I really wanted Deangelo Williams could have been had next season.

Even though I Like Feeley. I feel that Rodgers will be better then any QB coming out next year save Matt Leinhart. That's just my opinion though.

Oh yeah we were in all but 1 game last year with a mediocre RB squad and horrible QB play. Imagine if we had solid QB play. That's the main reason I wanted a QB.

I felt we were competitive enough without a star RB already that we could do another season without a legit star at RB. So IMO QB was more imperative to get taken care of.

i wanted mike willams too. but ronnie will do great as soon as he gets to camp.

20 plays in a preseason game and you know that Saban screwed up and should have gone after Rodgers instead of Brown ?? Buddy, you are a fantastic prognosticator....

This is, by far, the most unbelieveable thread ever posted...

Why just because someone was impressed with a QB who was the #1 prospect till the combines. Or because he might be someone who thinks we needed a QB more then a RB?

Not a stupid thread at all.

I was here, lurking about. I have been lurking for a very long time. I know for a fact ALOT of people had him very high. In fact many people had him at #1. Even on draft day AFTER Smith's combine, a fair amount of people called the 49ers drafting Rodgers. His slide was a huge surprise to alot of people here (I am not saying maybe you didn't think he'd slide, but I know alot of others didn't). Even on draft day the "experts" were surprised.
Actually our own expert Boomer had him going #24 to Green Bay in his mock draft, so no we weren't that surprised he dropped that much.

The value of a RB is so little now in the NFL, but Ronnie Brown was the best player at a need position. I think on draft day I recall a trade scenario in which I believe Minnesota actually offered Miami there 7th an 18th, for the 2nd, perhaps if that went through Rodgers would've been the logical choice at 18, or Barron. I don't have a link, I just remember some guy in one of the teams war room reporting it. Saying Alex Smith had no value at #2 is laughable to me, I think if he was there he would've been taken by the Phins, I was not high on him, but the guy is just so damn smart, that I think he'll be successful, once the 9ers get decent players around him. To me the best player in the draft was Mike Williams, but WR wasn't needed as much as a RB was. It really has nothing to do with Ricky coming back, if he gets 1 yd, than I guess i'd be happy with his return, but if the team wasn't so desperate for a RB, than Rodgers probably should've been taken, but definately not with the 2 pick. I like the pick of Ronnie Brown, I preferred Benson, but still to me a RB has no value at the top of the draft. Look at it this way, the Chargers were garbage till Brees had a spectacular season, with the best RB in the NFL.

Honestly I think we woulda grabbed one of the corners if Saban knew he was going to lose out on Webster in round 2.

our greatest need was at running back and saban says he chose the best player available, meaning he thought that brown was best pick for us at the 2nd slot.

Simple, it's called hype. Alex Smith went from 2nd round pick, to late 1st round pick, to mid 1st round pick, then 1 week before the draft 1st pick overall. With this the hype on Aaron Rodgers went down, everyone started saying that Alex Smith was way better and that Rodgers wasn't as good as everyone thought, a week before the draft. Along with that the dolphins had sent a 2nd round pick on Feeley and simply put using a 1st round pick and 2nd round pick on a QB would not be accepted. Also at the time Ricky Williams was still a ? and still is so using a 1st round pick on Ronnie Brown, the most complete back in the draft was needed.

The only reason why Rodgers fell that far down the draft board was no team that drafted before GB needed a QB to start or groom or groom for the future(maybe Dallas but they have Drew).

Miami with a new coach Saban probably wasn't sure what he had in Feely @ the time. So spending the 2nd overall pick on Rodgers would have been a potential risk.

No it wasnt....Based on what....the only suprise was to see him go as late as 24 but he wasnt supposed to go anywhere close to the top 15.....

you wanna know why QB's alllllllways go top pick.....its because they have better value for the money that the top pick is due....you could sign a number one QB for 6 years and know that by year 4 your gonna give him a 6 or 7 year bonus....QB's are around the game for 12-15 years...more than anybody else on average....now who is gonna give Ronnie Brown 25 million garaunteed a top pick if he has a third the playing span that QB's have....and the fact of the matter is even San Fran wanted out of the first pick...because they didnt need to a QB...no body remotely in the first round did....Green Bay did Rogers a favor...because he could have dropped farther than that

Alex Smith was not a combine hero. The longer teams watched film of his career in Utah, the more they fell in love with him. Simple as that. Just like with Phil Rivers, the more they kept watching the film, seeing how productive he was, and how he always overcame, the more they fell in love. If anything, Rodgers had better tangibles than Smith

rodgers would have been a nice pick up, but not at #2. i was hoping saban would end up trading up and taking him in the low 20's, but i guess saban was not impressed w/ rodgers.

We would have had to give up a lot to do that...think of what Buffalo gave up to move up and get Losman.
