Can Rishard Matthews Break Out This Year?

Last year, he caught 4 of 4 behind the line, 23 of 35 between 0-9yds, with 14 of 22 over the middle, 12 of at 10-19 yds, 6 of 9 over the middle and 2 of 6 over 20 yds. He played 90% of his snaps in the slot and ranked #12. His drop rate was #4 of all WR's.

I read on another thread that he is working out with Tannehill 2 times a week on his own. This has to help. Gibson played very well, and it's gonna be tuff to get a lot of balls thrown his way with our 3 other WR's. I still belive he is going to step it up from last year. Great to have a #4 WR with his ability.

We called so many comeback and hook routes last season, our WRs were constantly playing with their backs to the endzone and our YAC suffered as a result. Hardbfor any receiver to showcase their elusiveness on a bunch of comebacks, but Matthews showed himself to be the only receiver who could turn back upfield quickly and make extra yards.

Good point. To go along with that, Matthews only caused 1 missed tackle. His 4.2 YAC avg was mostly carrying defenders for the extra yards.

Yeah...

I'd say he already had his breakout year. We have 4 really solid WR's but none are "ELITE"

Each serve a purpose and play a role. Mathews, after Gibson went down really stepped up.

Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews we have a way solid 4.

The only difference is Matthews is coming int his 3rd year, and I do not think he has reached his potential. JMO

I couldn't ask for a better #4 than him. In a 4/5 WR set (Clay being the 5th) there are serious mismatches either on Clay or Matthews. Matthews would be a 3 on many teams, 2 on a couple (looking at you Panthers) and is way better than the number 4 db on teams. Breakout...maybe. Contribute well...absolutely.

I've seen where Matthews was also a VG kick returner in college. Wonder if he can be used on punts like we did with Bess?

Let the kids play for **** sake. Sitting on the bench does nothing.

He will break out and hey why can't we go 5 wide with Wallace, hartline, Gibson, Mathews and clay. Somebody will get open, i think we would have if the line wasn't such crap last year

I think so. He's coming on as a pretty decent receiver. Works the sideline pretty well, hands catcher, and he's tough. I think he will be a good replacement for Hartline on the boundary in a few years.

I remember a play last year (vs the Pats I think?) where he clearly had control and both feet in but it was ruled incomplete

I'm looking at him more as a VG guy in the slot.

Philbin has done this is GB. In 2011, before he became our HC, he had Nelson, Jennings, Jones, and Driver to go with Finley. Combined they scored 45 TD's. That alone was a hair under 20 points a game.

How would everyone compare those 4 WR's to ours?

Wallace = Poor Mans Jennings
Hartline = Nelson, not only because they both happen to be white either
Driver = Matthews
Jones = Gibson
Finley = Not really on the roster!

GB squad is overall and individually better I think.Although, it's kinda hard to really say considering we don't have Aaron Rogers back there throwing them the rock.

Green bay was better. Its a good comparison but i would rate each of their players a notch above all of our guys. Nelson is hartline only a better yac player for example

I see a toughness in this kid that I really like. He just needs to control his emotions a bit [have seen over exuberance one too many times] and get his head in the game as at times, he tends to need adjustments from other players - also needs to learn to sit in zones better, which comes with playing time.

There's a lot to like so I hope he sees more of the field.
