Can we just cut Wheeler, please?

I have no doubt if Ireland was still here in two years that he would cut him and sign somebody else that is useless. We've reinvented our LB corps twice with Ireland by cutting big money LB's for big free agents, and each has left us worse than before and all of the guys have failed to be consistent tacklers and have been terrible in coverage.

The LB corps is to Ireland what the Ol was to Sparano.

Ireland really screwed us good with all his lousy picks and giving big contracts to Wheeler and Wallace. The linebacking corps sucks, Grimes is on a one year contract and who knows if they'll be able to re-sign him. Patterson has played well but what's he play like once every 4 games or so? The rest of the corners are meh. Jones has had a down year, Clemons plays ok but is not great. The Defensive line with all the money they are getting paid and supposedly all the talent they have ,they sure sure do disappear a lot during games. I don't know whether to blame it all on the players or on Coyle's scheme and play calling.

It's all of it. I have failed to see anything in Coyle's scheme that impresses me. We have capability of generating average or better pass rush by position at all 4 line spots and fail to be able to utilize that to generate consistent pressure. Our LB corps seems to be only good at blitzing and yet they don't make much impact there either to help the pass rush. But the players outright failing to make tackles that are easily made has to be on them too. Still, a better coach instills the need in players to make those tackles.

you got 2 more years of that awful contract...so enjoy it...the trusnick extension while much cheaper is awful also...whoever the lb coach is if he has say in personnel fire his ass also...they obviously covet athlete over instincts which is as dumb as it comes in a lb

Most of our FA contracts have outs without having to swallow a suicide pill in terms of dead money. I have seen what stripping the roster of talent does, and the result was 2007 and by extension, still the mediocrity we have now. Huge proponents of rebuilding ground up fail to realize that for every success story, there are 5 more where the plan didn't work, and we are one of them. It's much easier to get talented when you already have some talent to build around than not, so I'm in favor of keeping most of the roster as long as they fit the next staff's scheme (which, to be honest, I think it would be a bad move to change scheme again). With all that said, Wheeler is a joke. Not only is he not worth his contract, his play right now is scarcely worth any contract. He's going to be Gibril'd at the end of the year.

It's amazing that if we had simply drafted Kiko Alonso we'd probably be 5-4 or 6-3 right now.

We are being outmaneuvered in the draft and free agency by the damn Bills of all teams.

That's... wow.

bottom line is you have to build thru the draft...this team didn't do it we got bad football players who can't ven help us with high picks...this team tries to build thru free agency...bad recipe...time for the owner to hold the decision maker responsible...jeff ireland

not even this qb could save his bacon...

We traded away considerable talent last year and we are left with almost no rookies contributing this year, so yes you are right. FA is not the devil people make it out to be, the problem is that most of the teams dipping big into that have needs that must be filled by adding those players. Better organizations build through the draft, and we easily could have found players like Gibson, Keller, Wheeler, and even Wallace if we were better at drafting. Also, when you have a third overall pick not contributing much, it's either a failure of a coaching staff to utilize a player with freak talent and get him on the field more, or its a failure of the front office by bringing in a guy at a draft position that demands immediate contributions drafted in that position. We likely won't know the answer for several years.

Tonight both Ellerbe and Wheeler quit on a lot of plays. We are paying these guys including Wallace a lot of money, and getting no results. Dansby is having a great year in Arizona, and I thought we were going to blitz more since we were getting younger and faster. I don't know how many sacks Ellerbe and Wheeler have, but it's probably the number of TDs that Wallace has. 62-7 loss and the 1-15 season were bad, but this is a really low point in Phins history.

Why do you assume he would even be seeing the field in the proper role with us? For all we know, Davis, Taylor, and Jordan could all be having stellar rookie campaigns for other teams. Gillislee could also be buried on another team's depth chart because he sucks.

I've watched Alonso, and I hate to say this, but that dude is friggin' awesome. He is going to be Pro Bowler for years to come, IMO.

It's not scheme. As hoops says, it's instincts. He's got 'em. He's got 'em bigtime.

Lb play is about instincts...lavonte David shot gaps to make plays cause he read what was coming...the day our lbs show they dx plays and sniff out screens or shoot gaps on anything other than their primary assignment is the day I die...

Ellerbe ok with some of that stuff but when your lbs are clean they need to attack and read the play right...wheelers late to everything...I mean everything

We deserve to get burned when we give big contracts to guys who weren't considered special coming out of college. Wheeler and Wallace were what, mid to late 3rd round? Reshad Jones was 5th round. You can't get suckered into thinking they have hidden upside and will continue to improve. The examples overwhelm the exceptions. Jeff Ireland buys into the sucker exception thinking all too often.

I love how Reshad Jones makes one or two plays per game that the commentator spotlights, and somehow that excuses all the inept plays throughout the game. Today he hung on for dear life a couple of times around the ankle. That's becoming Jones' specialty. Then he crashed down on the perimeter on a 2nd and short play for a nice stop, even if he was dragged an extra half yard on that play. For the bulk of the game he's an embarrassment.

But Wheeler is unquestionably worse. You could live with a downhill (occasional) attacker like Ellerbe who is terrible in coverage, as long as the guy flanking him had nice toughness and instincts.

Regardless. The outcome will be the same. Tannehill takes two critical sacks on the game tieing/winning drive to lose the game.

He just took them huh? All the time in the world and he took them?

The thing is if we weren't so god awful or just simply ignoring the position in the draft, we wouldn't have to be forced to spend big in free agency. It's like the priority Ireland puts on wr in the draft. Half this board was calling for Keenan Allen but our road is to give Wallace a fortune instead
