Can we just cut Wheeler, please?

I know we were very flat on offense and defense in the first quarter especially, and we could blame the loss on a handful of other things, but as a few previous posters wrote, I also believe Wheeler blew the game with that stupid penalty.. We went from possibly good field position with over 5 minutes left and a momentum swing, to getting the ball on our 5 yard line with 3 minutes left.. Philbin should of had someone kick the snot out of him when he got off the field!!

We deserve to get burned when we give big contracts to guys who weren't considered special coming out of college. Wheeler and Wallace were what, mid to late 3rd round? Reshad Jones was 5th round. You can't get suckered into thinking they have hidden upside and will continue to improve. The examples overwhelm the exceptions. Jeff Ireland buys into the sucker exception thinking all too often.

I love how Reshad Jones makes one or two plays per game that the commentator spotlights, and somehow that excuses all the inept plays throughout the game. Today he hung on for dear life a couple of times around the ankle. That's becoming Jones' specialty. Then he crashed down on the perimeter on a 2nd and short play for a nice stop, even if he was dragged an extra half yard on that play. For the bulk of the game he's an embarrassment.

But Wheeler is unquestionably worse. You could live with a downhill (occasional) attacker like Ellerbe who is terrible in coverage, as long as the guy flanking him had nice toughness and instincts.

yep...i cant really argue with any of that...jones play has been highly underwhelming...but the biggest issue on this defense is philip wheeler...i couldn't believe we payed that guy that kind of contract on day 1 of free agency...if he's not blitzing and even that is overrated with guy unless he's clean he's horrid...gets blocked and ridden out so much cause he's late to everything...not an ounce of instincts for the position...

My opinion on Wheeler gets worse every week, such a weak link out there who just gets targeted ugh

Yeah, Wheeler is brutal. I loved it when they panicked and called a stupid roll out play on 3rd down and then Wheeler bailed them out with the penalty. Then Tampa Bay made an even worse call, rolling out on 3rd and 1 to the left side. They did everything they could to give away the game but matched them with an incompetent 4th quarter.

While we're at it, get rid of Reshad Jones. There should be some sort of laugh track here whenever he's announced as a Jeff Ireland find, or some type of decent player. Jones takes bad angles that even the bad angle specialists of all time haven't thought of. Check out Rainey's long run down to the 1 yard line. Jones runs himself right out of the play. It's like we volunteered 10 on 11. He wandered forward to his left even though there was no indication Rainey or the design of the play were headed there. Jones got caught in the trash and was immediately nullified. Rainey took the flow of the play in the other direction and it was wide open spaces. A safety with any type of instincts would have filled that play perfectly and held Rainey to 5 or 7 yards tops. Then Jones played tight to the line of scrimmage on the next play and was toyed with, per usual.

Reshad Jones is awful. I think you and I have been on the same page even when he had his "breakout" year. Everyone overrates him on this board and he is one of the worst on the defense.

The only players in the secondary I would keep are Grimes, Patterson, and Clemons and the rookies from this year. Jones, Carroll, and Wilson can go.

I like DJ Campbell as a Special Teamer, so I would possibly keep him as well.
