If Saban didnt want Webster that's enough for me. Who had a better take on the guy's abilities? He was only his coach and saw him day in and day out

The reports are that Webster was the guy Saban wanted and were watching him drop to us.

Webster just went three picks before us, so we fell back on Roth. :)

Saban said that he WANTED Webster. Said he would have chosen him if he would have been there for our pick.

well when it comes to LSU players in this draft i'll go with saban's choice. If he wouldve taken webster than I wouldve wanted webster

This is something I've never seen discussed.

Back when the draft happened and we got our pick from KC in the 2nd round, Nick Saban was really hoping that CB Corey Webster would fall to us, but he got snatched by the Giants. He called Webster a "special" young man, and a "special" talent.

But Corey was gone, and we got the "Manimmal" Matt Roth. What I'm wondering is, assume Saban was right about Webster, and the guy would be really good. Would you rather have had Roth anyway?

I brought it up because I feel that if Saban got Webster, he might have been making a mistake. It's one thing to mine your own players from the lower portions of the draft, like Daniels, but IMO it is another to spend high picks on them. It sounded to me like Saban was too close to Webster to make an accurate judgement of his prospects as a pro.

If I had my choice on draft day, I would have wanted Webster. He was first round talent, who dropped because of injuries. Although he is only 5'11'', he is well built, being very physical, with excellent speed. In two years time he had 15 int's, and 42 passes defended. A lot of Corners don't get those type numbers in four years, much less 2.

After seeing Roth in practice I changed my tune a bit. I'm very happy with selecting him. He and McDugal were going at it tooth and nail. He has natural instincts, ones that you really cannot teach. McDugal was getting the best of him for the first part of practices, but Roth never gave up, and at one point you could see it frustrated McDugal.

Roth was the better pick. If you were a quarterback playing against the dolphins and you break the huddle and see Taylor,Zuchini,Traylor,Roth,Crowder,Thomas, and Say ow espesialy with the infusion of bad a$$ attitude that Roth, and Crowder bring you might start hurrying some throws. Remember how bad Taylor got into brady's head monday night? With some added talent, and attitude in the front7,and some way more creative schemes our pass d willbe better than ever.

I liked roth more than Webster. Even after the Surt trade I viewed DL as a greater need than CB. I also believe that Roth has the ability to be a very strong player and that a good pass rush can ultimately make most any secondary look better than it is.

IMO it boils down to value. Is a good cornerback more valuable than a good DE?
The way the league is going with the passing game rules, it would seem that a good cornerback is more valuable, but a closer look reveals something important. A DE can affect a game in so many ways. He can make a big stop, sack the QB on a critical down, pressure the QB into bad passes, etc. There is no such thing as a shutdown corner anymore in this league and you always have to keep in mind that the league will only continue to make new rules to help the passing game because that's what attracts fans (at least the laymen one). Instead of constantly trying to find a new breed of corners that can adapt to new rules, it is much easier to just attack the ball at it's source: the QB. Your corners don't have to worry about having to hold and grab when you have two DEs that get to the QB in a hurry. We've all seen Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain get burned so many times because JT wasn't able to get to the QB fast enough. No matter how good the CB is, you can't hold an NFL WR for too long.
So yes I think having a Matt Roth will be more valuable in the long run than a corey webster. This is assuming Matt Roth turns out to be everything we think he'll be. The guy is too intense to fail anyway...

If we did drafted Webster you would of been hearing alot of complaining here.

But i am glad that Webster got took before we got their because Roth could help us out more then Webster can in the future. And at this point, i am glad that we got Roth/Daniels instead of Webster.
