Chad Henne has been given "full reign" to audible at the line of scrimmage this season.
Coach Tony Sparano is known for his micromanaging, but he is giving Henne some freedom this season. And with new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll instilling confidence, Henne has compiled a 93.4 quarterback rating through three preseason games. We're not saying the corner has been turned here, but Henne appears much more comfortable in the pocket. On a related note, Brandon Marshall is looking like a steal at his current fourth-round ADP. I never understood why he didn't have the ability to audible last season. Is it a wonder he played so poorly when his OC was calling a play-action pass on 3rd and long with no players in the backfield and he had no ability to change the ridiculous play?

Against the Buccs, we saw Henne make several audibles, and they were successful for the most part. This could be a big factor in his success this season.

It was the system Dan Henning used. It is similar to the one Mike Martz uses and the one Jimmy Johnson used with Dan Marino. These system rely more on execution and defeating the man in front of you.

a system is only as good as the men executing it. unfortunately you can't execute the man using the system.

It's funny because I noticed him changing a few plays and was surprised and was wondering if he was going to get reamed after that play lol......I think if were going to let Chad do his thing and make him our no doubt #1 give him full reign!

Not trying to be positive here, but how great would it be if Henne actually turns out to be a good QB?

I don't think it's the ability the audible. I think the new offense (plus his offseason becoming more of a team leader) has instilled him with confidence. He likes the system -- it's more quarterback friendly, it's similar to what he ran at Michigan -- so he's just playing with more confidence and aggressiveness. And that really can make all the difference. The ability to audible is just an extension of that.

The test will come when and if he plays poorly. How long will his new found confidence last if things begin to go wrong? How much do his coaches and teammates really believe in him?

I think it's really important for him to go out and play like he did against Tampa for at least the first few games. If he does -- even if we lose because of other factors -- they'll have his back the rest of the season. But players know as well as fans that preseason is preseason. Nothing he can do during preseason will really make believers out of them. Many still look at him the way Crowder does, especially on the defensive side, I'd say. When it comes time for them to play transition defense after an INT, they have to believe that Chad's their guy, Chad made a mistake but if we put up a superhuman effort and stop these guys, Chad will bring the victory home for us. That's really important for them to believe, and you could tell last year that they didn't particularly believe it. It was more of a "Goddammit Chad, what are you doing to us?" kind of thing.

Playing well early in the season is everything to him. It's just to bad for him that our early schedule is something of a murderer's row.

They never really trusted Henne. Bottom line.

Magoo, I agree with you but I think the other factor is Trust. If Chad now feels like the OC, Daboll, trusts him this will allow him to play more freely. Ask any employee what they want, its to be recognized for doing a good job and be given responsibility over there job. THis is finally what we are doing with Chad. This will help his comfidence in himself.

Waiting for the henne haters...ironically wv and co. has been eerily quiet. Oh wait, silly me. I forgot how easy it is kick a guy when he is down...

I agree. The trust is important. It also breeds confidence.

Chad Henne always wants to be the good soldier. It was never more evident than last year when Marshall wanted to audible to go routes against single high coverage and Henne wouldn't because that's not what he was coached to do. Some guys -- like Thigpen -- have it in them to change things on the fly and ignore what their coaches are saying if they think that will work.

Henne isn't like that, and he probably never will be. He's going to do what he's coached to do, for good or for ill (it's the source of the whole "robot" thing, I'd say). And that's fine... as long as your coaches aren't being idiots. His were last year. Now that he has new coaches who are at least not being idiots, he's free to do what's logical because he's also being told to do what's logical. Some players aren't that vulnerable to their coaching, but he is. So he needs to be managed very carefully.

If totally with you on this one. He's that kid who never freelances. Does what the play tells him to. Was one of Emmitt Smith's strengths when he played. He trusted his line, easy to do, and went where the play told him to. Some guys are taught at a young age to do exactly what the coach tells them and they will. Hopefully now that we have someone better at calling the plays it will help him. Also Daboll hopefully is coaching him to think for himself alittle with the audible thing. All I can do is hope that the new system is all Chad was looking for and some trust from his coaches.

I have to admit the last 2 games Henne looks reborn he is playing with confidence and poise in the pocket I have never seen out of him, but more important he looks like he has been having fun out there! I said it several times I thought Sparano micro managing screwed with Henne as much if not more the Hennings crap play calling! I think Tony needs to concentrate on the oline and leave Henne and the offensive philosphy to Daboll! Because it is working! Have you seen how bad our freaking oline is? Henne is being forced to release the ball as soon as he finishes his drop and he is making the right read and executing. Jesus Tony do something with that screen door on a submarine you call a RT before he gets our entire backfield killed!

I was forced to watch the Pats vs Lions and if we can use our big freak WR down the field like the Lions did we can abuse the Pats secondary! But for the love of god the QB is going to need a little time Tony! Your QB is getting hit way to much and unlike years past it isn't because he is holding on to the football!

Henne needs to start the season off positively since confidence feeds on itself.

There's a saying that "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and hopefully it'll apply to #7. That guy was so browbeaten by the fossil and fistpumper last year, yelled at by Marshall, criticized by other players anonymously, and azzholes like Omar. Even if you're not in his corner you've gotta at least begrudgingly concede that he deserves a ton of credit to this point for taking the leadership initiative during the lockout...and fighting through all the task interference and pressure to perform like he has.

What is going to kill #7 is the rightside of our oline! Jesus I stayed up to watch the tape delay and I started having nightmares and flashbacks for Henne! We are going to be replacing our entire backfield by the bye week if this keeps up!
