Of 81 4-3 OLB ranked by PFF, McCain was #1. His pass rush grade was 9.6, #2 was 3.6, and he rushed the QB 36 times with 2 sacks, 2 hits, and 6 hurries. He was good vs the run, and average in coverage. I know that preseason does not mean a lot but, when you are the best after 4 games, it does mean something.

He also graded out better than any other Phin player.
 
The one part of this kids' game that I really like is when he takes on blocks in the run game. Violent with great technique. Such a great position to work from.
 
With any luck McCain just needed to grow up a bit in college, and his dismissal must have been the wake up call he needed. I like what I see so far, if nothing else the guy is fearless.
 
It is only preseason but, so far he has looked somewhat of what we were expecting of Jordan last preseason.

Yeah, he is a "take no prisoners" kind of player, which we really can use. His cover skills are not great from what I have seen but, don't care much if he can do what he has done vs top NFL competition.
 
He appears to be Dion Jordan without the high price tag. Good they realize his potential at LB and don't try to make him something else.
I expect to see him on the field in passing situations probably playing Dion's role until he gets back so he'll get a chance to have some early success.

58, 96, and 97 are available "linebacker" numbers. I'm going to assume they're not going to hand out 54 or 99.

I hope he takes 58 because if he's on the field with Jordan -- who wears 95 -- and he's wearing 96 that's going to be confusing as ****.

His college number was 40, by the way. Some players are superstitious about that kind of thing and want a pro number that includes at least a number from their college number (Reggie Bush wearing 25 after wearing 5 in college) or, say, adds up to it (an example escapes me right now, but you see this a lot, too). Given that McCain had success wearing 47 I'm going to guess he ends up wearing 97.
 
If through the fanciful "Back To The Future Machine" GMs could have spied how well McCain performed in preseason, how could he have not ended up a 2nd or 3rd round pick even with the off field caution flags?
 
To give a fair comparison, Jordan rushed the QB 71 times this preseason with 0 sacks, 4 hits, and 5 hurries in his second year, and did play a bit vs the first team's OL.

I am really excited about McCain and the big plays that change games. He looks like a budding star and play maker. The sooner he replaces Wheeler or Ellerbee the better.
