Christian Wilkins Adds Balance, Positional Versatility To Dolphins’ Defense

Josh Rosen really rained on Christian Wilkins’ parade in South Beach.

Landing the 2018 NFL Draft’s No. 10 overall selection for the 62nd overall pick in 2019 and a 2020 fifth-rounder was a slam dunk for the Miami Dolphins, but it shouldn’t keep the Miami faithful from celebrating Wilkins, the Fins’ 2019 first-rounder.

Balance
A former five-star recruit with an illustrious collegiate career at Clemson, Wilkins is a freakishly athletic defensive interior for his size (6-foot-6, 315 pounds) that wins with great burst and quickness off the snap. With favorable traits and improved technique in Year 4 of his Tigers tenure, he earned a career-high 93.0 overall grade in 2018, ranking third among the 227 draft-eligible defensive linemen with 400 or more defensive snaps played this past season.

Excellent article, but I do take issue with the Rosen "rained on his parade" statement.

I think most believe Wilkins is such a solid guy, both on and off the field, as well as in the locker room, that there isn't much to discuss. There are no gaurantees with any player, but much like Minkah, there is optimism that he performs like a high quality veteran from day one.

I appreciate that the recruiting star ranking is being cited more frequently in articles like this, instead of the stale belief that it doesn't matter. Keep taking 2 and 3 star guys who bloom late in college in the early rounds and you'll see how it matters.
 
I absolutely loved this pick. And remain giddy about the player.

He may have a shot at one of my favorites Big Daddy Bowens, if he can produce.

Minkah I put into the Marion mold, I put this young man into equal high regard, imo.

I don’t love the pick especially if he is going to play DT, we now have 8 DT’s on the roster! It feels like when we drafted Harris after we just extended (blech) Branch. I suspect though that he was drafted more for his pedigree although it’s concerning that we never met with him pre draft. I also hope they intend to use him more as a 5T which we desperately need and move him inside on passing downs.

With that said if you are basing your opinion on that video, then you could be right but we don’t really know the scheme or what his job was on each play. It looked to me that he was playing as a true gap penetrating 3T so you will naturally have hits and misses. He was also going against a kid who was a 5 Star recruit and is expected to take over for the departed Williams at LT next year so the kid was no slouch.

Im not sure what you see to be honest. I counted 4 times the entire game he was turned out. I also counted 3 double teams he beat, two of them getting to the QB. Clearly there are some assignments where he slid down the line and got washed so to open gaps and allow others to fill. Clear scheme though.

I love the pick because I am all about playing it safe with our 1st round pick. I want someone who is as much of a sure thing as there can be and that is why I also loved it when we took Fitzpatrick the year before. I know he hasn't played a down yet, but we need to hit on our players if we are going to raise the talent level. We might have missed on Harris and see how that has set us back?

The RG , Leatherwood, for Alabama looks like a total stud! I wish I was more excited about the Wilkins pick. Hope he can actually be a disruptive force on the line, I'm definitely not getting my hopes up.
