Is Flynn a bigger risk than RG3?
I'll start by pointing I dislike the idea of bringing RG3 to Miami.
That said, Matt Flynn is a prototypical WCO pocket passer while RG3 is a running passer.
Pocket passers like Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning or Tom Brady have dominated this league, while spectacular, shinning, speedy running QB have never won a Super Bowl. Also as RG3 looks like a poor man's version of Michael Vick, that comes with more questions than answers.
But let's say there is always time for changes and several experts agree that spread offenses will lead the Pro-level within the next 10 years. So Tebow, Newton, Vick and RG3 should be part of the ongoing revolution.
But the fact that Joe Philbin and Mike Sheman (current HC & OC of the Miami Dolphins) are WCO experts is bugging on my head as they don't look fitting as coaches for such type of player. The risk of suffering a breakage within the team could lead to a soon end of the Philbin era. As it's for sure that RG3 won't fit as WCO passer and Philbin is going to be wasted under such experiment, I see the risk of suffering wasting coaching talent.
On the other hand, Philbin knows very well everything on Flynn but market could force Miami to work a Kolb-like contract on Matt Flynn for over 60 million dollars in the next 5-6 years. The risk of having poor results creates a 3-5 year gap from recovery. So Joe Philbin and crew could have less than 4 seasons to prove his worth.
Who is a bigger risk? An incompatible QB or an expensive free agent?
