Clean House - Call Marino

I like the way the op is thinking. The problem is that Marino in any capacity but limited figurehead won't work. Cowher and John Gruden don't seem to want to coach anymore. If they have no passion left for the job we shouldn't touch them. I think we need a dynamic young GM to come in and assist the team in making the big decisions re: Head Coach, OC, DC, etc. I like the idea of bringing back ex-Dolphins players from the past to infuse the franchise with some excitement. John Offerdahl was a good thought. A hero on the field, a popular guy and a very astute businessperson. I have to give this more thought and maybe I can come up with other ex-players that could help. But this fix starts with getting Ireland out of here and bringing in a stellar replacement.

Personally I think Marino wouldn't be a bad choice at all. He quit last time because he realized that he basically had no power whatsoever. I could envision Dan in some kind of czar role or de facto owner since Ross lives in New York. He could hire a GM and HC, much like Elway has done. I don't think Cowher would be willing to report to Dan though. I think Dan would have a better idea of what it takes to win in this league more then some pencil pusher like Ireland anyway. Lets give him another shot at a ring!

Marino in some capacity that's not GM related. He is no Elway. Marino even sux as a broadcaster. Elway is a business man through and through and Marino is a good dude who was a great QB but keep him away from football ops.

Wouldn't mind seeing Marino as a QB coach.
He'd never take the pay cut.

What experience does Marino have in evaluating talent at all positions? At contract negotiation? At salary cap management? At evaluating potential coaches? At player acquisition?

When you hire someone to be in charge of your football team, you expect the person will have some expertise in at least one of these areas. In what area is Marino an expert?

Get rid of everyone with the exception of Brian Gaines to act as interim and ultimately deputy GM.

Call Dan Marino, offer him the bank to take the John Elway role i.e. Exec President of Football Operations and consult quickly to identify targets for General Manager, Head Coach and associated Co-ordinators...

Then spend what it takes to employ a bona fide back office, identify a GM and male him an offer he cannot refuse - Nick Caserio in New England is my choice, also think laterally, if there is a role for a statistical "moneyball" style guru ala Paraag Marathe of the 49ers - do it - build this thing properly and to last.

As far as the coaching staff is concerned Marino is close with Bill Cowher who has apparently already spoken to Dan Snyder, get in now and offer him what it takes to come here and fix this mess. If he says no then approach Jon Gruden - give them carte blanche to bring in there own people - do what it takes. If they want their own GM get them.

An overhaul or band-aid of Philben and a new OC will result in 2011 all over again. The roster is young and has talent and with the correct additions can be turned around quickly.

Marino back will put the Dolphins on the map and would be the catalyst to attract a solid coaching staff once and for all, no more experiments, bandaids or first year coaches learning on the job...

Yes please keep Brian Gaines! He gets me my game tix every year when I fly down..

Just in time for the worst post of the year! Dan Marino was a QB, not an executive.

Well Ross obviously doesn't know anything about football. I'm not necessarily suggesting that Marino picks the players. I think he is more capable than Ross to pick a GM and HC. Ross is an absentee owner! While Marino is certainly no expert regarding the salary cap or contract negotiations, I would consider him an expert in the game of football, who has connections and could potentially hire a capable GM and coach. I wouldn't say he's my 1st choice but I don't want a guy who's just in it for the paycheck like Parcells either.
