Coaches Film on the Nonmaculate Rederption: Proof of Forward Pass

why are we still debating something that doesnt matter at all?!

Its not about us, its about the overall poor officiating we have seen across the entire NFL this season. Its not a Miami Dolphins thing, its a systematic problem in the NFL.

where exactly is the proof? grainy images at an odd angle doesn't give us proof, it looks like it may have been slightly forward but no way to tell for sure.

According to the NFL, a pass actually begins when the QB's hand starts the throwing motion, not when the ball leaves his hand - so the mark at where the pass begins should be where the throwing motion begins, which is actually a few feet back from what you see in that picture, proving even more that it was a forward pass. This is much like the rule where if a QB's hand is moving forward when attempting a pass and is simultaneously strip-sacked, its considered an incomplete pass and not a fumble - because the pass began at the QB's throwing motion, not when the ball leaves his hand.

From the NFL rule book:

"When a player is in control of the ball and attempting to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his hand starts a forward pass"

he didn't throw it like a normal pass, he sling shotted it, kind of like jai alai so in that case the motion started even further away and came backward.

it's very close I think it is forward by half a yard but it's too close to overturn. just be happy he stepped out and we won. and next time teach them to tackle the ball not wait for the next lateral

Doesn't matter how he threw it. What matters is from where he threw it, and the NFL defines the beginning of the pass (or lateral or slingshot or jai alai move or whatever) as being the point where the passer begins the throwing motion, not where the pass leaves his hand.

Now that it's over and the Dolphins survived:

1) Coyle will position his players accordingly and discuss whether it's best to call timeout beforehand.

2) Special teams will be instructed not to touch the ball on the Patriots' dribble onside kick until/if it travels 10 yards. My gut tells me it's happening, and not just if the situation dictates it.

he didn't really have a regular throwing motion though, is it viewed the same way?

How was your ****ty picture with the crooked line any better? You submitted that as "proof" didn't you?

Not sure, but I just read the rule literally: "...any intentional forward movement of his hand starts a forward pass."

Imo, the QB controlled the ball and had intentional forward movement during his throwing motion, and hooked it as he released it. I think you would have to prove that it was a backwards pass at that point, not prove that it was a forward pass.

Or ben fumbling in the end zone back in 09 against us, and the ref stating there wasn't enough cameras in the stadium to view a different angle..

The thing w/ that is the ball was out of Benny's hands before crossing the GL & the phins player recovered(possesion is 9/10th of the law?)

Why are we still debating this?

There were several things about that play that made it problematic the most obvious being the fact that the WR stepped out of bounds. We are behaving like we had lost the game. We rightfully didn't so lets just move on.

there's that reading problem again. Where did I ever said it showed conclusive evidence? I said it was very close, no way they could overturn.

if you just read the posts we'd avoid any issues.

LD7 - how in hell, did you get your hands on the actual coaches' film? Is there something that you are not telling us, buddy? Are you an employee of the Dolphin organization? Or do you break down the video for the technically challenged, Mike Sherman?
