Dallas was a 3rd round pick, who only player 2 snaps all of lat season, and no one is happy with that with what we went through on the OL. However, in preseason, he was moved all over the OL between LG, RG, RT, and a bit at LT. There's no way a rookie is going to adapt to that and be ready to play.

Now, I see where Philbin was quoted as saying that we need to find one position for him to play and let him develop at that position.

My question is after having a player for a full year, and evaluating him before the draft, why have coaches not found a position to play him at? What am I missing?

Benton can make a man out of him if he can. I have confidence in Benton making a player out of Thomas, where? I think guard is his position, to me it seemed he lacked the quickness to keep a DE from getting the corner on him. that would make tackle a bad position for him

Part of the allure on drafting Thomas was his ability to play almost any position on the line.
He played LT his senior year in college but was projected as a OG in the NFL.

His shoulder injury and shoulder surgery last year before the draft (2/7/13) most likely hindered his strength more than anyone anticipated.
As an OG you need that strength to move DTs, thus the coaches tried to move him outside to OT.

I am going to say an offseason of lifting and a year of experience in the system will help Thomas compete for an OG spot in TC.

I wouldn't be screwing around with him at right tackle. Just put him at guard where he belongs and hope he gets stronger. If he has some continuity at guard he may have a better shot to develop instead of constantly shuffling positions.

I saw enough of him at tackle. Let him develop at guard where he belongs.

I also recall last year that Philbin said he would play on the left side at either guard or tackle. They saw him as a left side guy. We know for a fact he is not a left tackle. Left guard next to Albert could work. Put Shelly Smith at right guard as a vet next to a rookie right tackle. That way you wouldn't have an overly young right side.

should be fun, shelly smith, brenner, thomas. alot of potential at guard which are all scheme fits, add a vet and we are set at guard

Agree. I thought for sure we drafted him as an OG, and was surprised at us moving him all over, which killed any chance of playing time last year. I still don't see why Philbis, a former OL coach, is saying that we are still looking for what position to put him at. A year of evaluation should have established that.

I know Dallas has talent, and Brenner showed some VG potential. IF they both got stronger, we may have better options in house than we had thought.

What a bad, bad pick.

Bad pick but hopefully he can contribute at guard. We wont know until camp...More reason why I think we should pass on OL at #19 unless Martin or one of the tackles happen to fall to us

What a bad, bad pick.

Not really. Just because he didn't play last year doesn't mean he doesn't have a future. He shut down Clowney last year and was projected a top 50 pick in the draft. We got good value for him and he graded out very well by every draft analysist. A little better coaching and strength training could pay out.

I'd like to see what Benton can do before making any judgment on Thomas.

As for whats bolded above, Sean Smith shut down Julio Jones in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.

I really hope this guy can turn it around but last year after the bullying BS we were desperate for guards and he was not even a consideration.
He gets the benefit of doubt being a rookie but it's time to step up and get on the field.
