Commentary: Supplemental Draft: Wright or Wrong?

He has potential to play 1 technique. According to Dave Te' Thomas's scouting report on him: "He has enough strength to stall the double team, showing good flexibility in order to gain leverage. He uses his arms well to recover and create a pile. When he maintains good pad level, he can split with effectiveness. He has proper hand technique to maintain separation from blockers. He is strong and quick with his hands, showing natural hand usage to stack and control...He will generally play with good leverage and pad level. Has the natural flexibility to hold ground firmly at the point of attack. Has the tools to be effective in the two-gap, as he will usually be very active with his hands, and does a nice job of keeping his feet free from low blocks."

Regarding the strength issue, weight lifting and in particular the bench press is an exercize, the more you do it the better you'll get at it. You can be a naturally strong person and not be good at that exercize.

Also, its been my experience that people with short arms have a big advantage over people with long arms with it comes to the bench press, their strength is more compact and they don't have to push the bar as far.

In a defensive lineman, you want a player with longer arms, so maybe too much is being made of the bench press reps. I'm not saying this kid shouldn't lift more, and I'm sure once in a Pro program he will lift regularly, but maybe to much is being made of it.

To a point. A guy can't exercise and exercise and just keep getting better at the bench press unless he adds muscle mass. When you add that muscle mass, that is when you lose speed. And, as professionals, teams assume that you have already made it to that point where you're muscles have been trained for maximum efficiency at the current mass that they are, because if you have not, you're deemed lazy, which Manuel Wright probably is.

The short arm long arm thing, I don't believe it. I've seen other tall guys in the NFL lift that bar plenty of times. Shaun Cody, who is only between 1 and 2 inches shorter than Wright, lifted it 34 times.

Playing with good leverage can mean penetrating or staying put. To me, the guy is clearly a penetrator...which isn't really what you need out of a nose tackle. A nose tackle isn't going to take on two interior linemen and move straight forward penetrating...he risks getting moved to the side which would be disastrous against the run.

Like I said when a guy can penetrate like he does, you don't put him at the 1-gap, that would be like putting a great receiving tight end at fullback.

Playing with good leverage can also mean keeping the center in place..idea situation for a NT, If he has the lower body strenght to do that and still get to the run, then he's affective..but a lot of this is a unknown...I don't want to count him out because of a bad workout..but I also realize he has to have the maturity to develope and not take plays off. In the 4-3 he looks dangerous, but that with college kids, now he'll be facing grown men who have to feed their families, he won't get any softness from them. Yet in 2 years he can dominate if he continues to develope. Can you really let someone with that kind of potential slip by..if we're rebuilding, then he may come into his own at the right time the team is trying to make a run.

Believe it...its not as drastic as some point out but it does make a difference probably not as big a difference as him not training hard.

Well, arm length is different than height, but its a fact its easier to push 225 pounds up 15 inches versus 25 inches on each rep for example.

Certainly there are long armed players that worked out a lot than can push up the bar 34 times, they could probably do it 42 times if there arms were shorter.

But really, natural strength is a different animal than weight lifting.

I have personally seen extremely powerful people that were not good at weight lifting because there were not used to the exercize.

Two things would have to be true to justify Manuel Wright becoming a Dolphin. One is that he that he had to have had a very explainable bad day at his pro day for good reason (e.g. sickness), and he privately has shown the Dolphins in his visit that he had the prerequisite strength to play on their defensive line. The other thing that must happen, is that Wright’s standing plummets, and the Dolphins are able to select him with a 4th or 5th round draft pick.

C'mon fellas, I gotta get at least a little credit for this one.

Thank you inFINS!! Heh.

Now, if the next time we see Vonnie Holliday, he's over 300 pounds...then I just have to run for president LOL.

You got my vote.

Man, I'm thrilled we got this dude in the 5th. He could be a whale of a steal.

Great call.

I'm just really happy that the Phins identified his dropping value and picked him in the right round. He was a guy we realy had obviously set our sights on based on his play at USC, but with the motivation problems and the bad workout, we couldn't afford to pay more than the guy is worth.

Wright's a roll of the dice that could pay off huge. Hopefully we got a steal. I actually have to tip my hat to the Colts for grabbing Roscoe Crosby as a freeagent. I think he might also turn out to be a steal
