Commentary: The Scorpion

Good read and great analogy. I'll make sure to remember that one.

I wouldn't be so sure of the scorpion sinking to the bottom of the river though. The NFL is just like any other professional league. A business. Which means, I wouldn't be surprised if 1 team out of 32 , even after a year suspension, is willing to give Ricky a shot. Not a million dollar contract, just a tryout. Because, like it or not, odds are at that tryout, that team will see the vision and innate feel for the game, most of us saw this year. It's that natural feel that made Ricky-lite still valuable and that he'll always have no matter how much pounds or disinterest he has for the game, that will tickle someone such as the Raiders and proceed to fetch him yet another minimum, incentive laden contract.

I'm not sure what the next step is after a one year suspension. Lifetime suspension, maybe? If that's the case, then I would be shocked if anyone rolled the dice on Williams. The fact that he's staring a one-year suspension in the face at this point would seem to me (and I'm betting to most NFL GMs and coaches) that the guy just can't walk the line with the substance abuse program. If you bring a guy in like that and he wins the starting job, then gets busted in midseason, what then? No, I think a one-year suspension would probably be the last we see of Ricky Williams. Again, 30 years old, and having missed 2 1/4 of the last 3 seasons.

Well, the hired gun thing is not new. I've pretty much said that since the day he came back.

If Williams missed a test, the effect is the same: one year suspension. If he toked up, snorted coke, dropped acid, or missed a test, there's no difference as to the net result. So to the extent that I jumped to a conclusion in assuming he smoked pot, guilty as charged. However, his past history makes me fairly confident on that score.

Nevertheless, if you'd prefer to think of it as a $9.1 million missed drug test, go for it.

But the net result may not actually be the same!!! :goof:

It makes sense to appeal a missed test (two angles= plead ignorance, or claim the law was unfair), it makes no sense to appeal a positive test (unless yoga medication really does 'looks' like an illegal substance). There's too little information to actually be talking about 'net results' at this point, way too little information.

Could be a bit premature.

Agreed.

Phunwin: I have no problem with folks "reporting" speculation in stories. But unnamed leaks are not official.

And using the word confirmed or validated without it coming from the NFL HQ and NFL Drug Testing Center with NFL HQ stamps of approval and confirmation just add to more specualtion.

Feel free to report it as "unconfirmed NFL" reports but dont come off like its final and done.

Good write up though, just not proven to be factual yet!

Give me a break. You know, if I said that about women in general, I would catch all kinds of crap.

Sorry guys. Wasn't supposed to be a slam on men.

What I should have said if you want to know a person's future behavior, look at their past behaviors. I'm a therapist. Its my mantra.

I'm not here to be the judge or jury on RW, but this is a GREAT article. Great use of the The Scorpion and Frog story. I'm impressed with the writing here, great job.
