Commentary: Where do Ronnie and Ricky Stack Up?

I saw mike vick totally dimanted a really good alabama defense in the music city bowl, I knew he would be doing that in the nfl someday.

Like I said in the article, there's little doubt that Vick is the best runner in Atlanta's backfield. I thought it would be silly to omit him. When a guy runs for that many yards, refusing to count him just because he takes snaps doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Thanks!

Muck gave me the idea, and a lot of the research was his; he came up with some RB groups I would have overlooked. So big ups to him, though he declined co-author credit, apparently. ;)

For those aspiring stat-heads out there who like this sort of thing, pro-football-reference.com has an excellent and easy to use stat database.

Fantastic work, guys. I knew there was a precedent for stellar RB talents co-existing, but the regularity with which it has happened is eye-opening.

Also, let me second the recommendation for pro-football-reference.com. It's indispensable to me in my work on the site.

Thanks Doc!

In fact, it's happened even more frequently than indicated in this article. As I said, I only took what looked like the best year for each pair (or trio) of backs. Some of these tandems ran strong for up to five years.

I'm a little skeptical that it will work for Ricky. He is used to being a one man show...unlike Ronnie. Ricky could get frustrated out there,...is he prepared for that mentally if he gets stuffed 2 series in a row and then pulled?
It remains to be seen whether he is able to adjust to this rotating RB thing...of which I am no fan of.

I think the fact you're not a fan of rotating backs colors your perspective on how those involved would handle it. I have seen nothing that indicates Ricky is a ball-hog or glory-hog. In fact, depending on whom you believe, his "overworked" status may be one of the reasons he left.

Regardless, I don't think splitting carries will damage Ricky's psyche. It's preetty screwed up as it is. :D

Of course it colors my perspective! ;) I'm a fantasy player...that should explain a lot.

Anyway, I said I was a little skeptical...not fully. I just remember when Ricky requested to be in during those crucial 3rd downs. He wanted more carries...etc.
I'm not sure his "overworked" claim was a outcry for a dual RB role or did he just want the offense mix it up more.

Sorry to do this, I actually agree with the article , but since the whole point of the messageboard is to sparkle a debate. Here is an article by Len Pasquarelli arguing exactly the opposite:

Nothing to be sorry about; I'm a big fan of Pastabelli's work. Aside from Peter King, he's the best in the business.

For one, I'm not necessarily advocating a 50-50 split of carries, just saying that there's a real chance to have a pair of running backs that could combine for huge numbers. Maybe that means that Brown gets 300 carries and Williams 150. Many of the pairings on that list clearly had an alpha dog, with the other guy in a backup role.

For another, I think the Tennessee situation is much different. This is probably a short-term solution; I'd be surprised if Williams is with the Dolphins next year, and would bet heavily against him being a Dolphin in 2007. In Tennessee, they have a pair of young running backs and just signed one of them long-term. Neither Henry nor Brown is likely to go anywhere anytime soon. Meanwhile, everyone knows that any split-time situation is to allow Ronnie Brown to ease into the pros and extend his career a little longer. If Brown isn't the primary ball carrier this year, he certainly will be next year.

Finally, and here's the biggest difference I have with Pasquarelli: the biggest reason you don't see productive RB tandems all that much has nothing to do with coaches not wanting them, and everything to do with not being able to have them. Getting one good running back is expensive, and two is a luxury most teams can't afford.

Then why are you calling him Pastabelli??? Has it not occurred to you that name is a slur and not an affectionate nickname.

It's a goof. Sorry if it offends you.

I was not offended I was surprised and it's not about me. How do you acknowledge someone with a slur??? A goof???

Mike Florio uses it to disparage Pasquarelli not as banter with a colleague. Just as Florio calls people turds should that be a goof to refer to Peter King???

The questions are rehetorical. :)
