Compensatory Picks To Be Announced Today - Any Guesses on If We'll Get Any?

I'm sick of the secrecy with how the comp picks are awarded. Baltimore and Pittsburgh clearly deserve picks, however some teams like New England that get rewarded yearly with a different set of criteria.

Why in the world did NE get a 4th rounder despite only a net loss of one player. I don't understand.

"Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula."

It's not just based on the number of players lost vs the number gained. If you lose four major players and gain three back of the roster players you are likely to get a comp pick. So comparing losing Welker but gaining an injured Amendola you would suspect a comp pick.

I think the idea of compensatory picks is stupid. Teams shouldn't be rewarded for not re-signing/signing players. I wish they would do away with that already. The Jets, Steelers and other teams getting extra 3rd round picks is ridiculous as is the Patriots getting an extra 4th rounder.

New England was given a 4th round compensatory draft choice for losing Wes Welker to the Broncos.

seems like they get rewarded for not even trying to retain welker. if they had made a qualifying offer (such as money plus years in line with a player with welker's talent and production and age) then they lost him, I could see where you could argue they deserve a 5th. but as far as I know they didn't even give him an offer or even a serious offer.

The good teams keep on winning no matter what. The bad teams keep on making excuses and blaming everything and everyone. We need to stop the madness and start winning out on the field. We could have gotten 5 extra picks each of the last 5 years and Ireland would have wasted them anyway.

Ozzy rules!!

Yes but its also based on contact terms and money which Welker's and Amendola's should wash out.

NE lost 4 guys. Signed 3. The 3 lowest rated guys they lost wash out with the three they signed basically meaning the 4th they got was for Wes Welker. I HATE NE, but their is nothing unfair going on here. If you don't sign big money free agents every year you are going to get comp picks.

@AdamSchefter: 3rd-round compensatory picks go to Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and SF.
@AdamSchefter: 4th-round compensatory picks go to Detroit, Baltimore, Houston, Detroit, NYJ, Baltimore, Atlanta and New England.

So big markets and fan favorites? NFL knows how to control its brand.

Baltimore elected to spend top $ on their QB, Joe Flacco. They then lost some players in free agency because they couldn't afford them. Now they get a 3rd and a 4th round draft pick. They could have elected to spend less on their QB and retained their other players. It was carefully considered by Ozzie Newsome. Why should they get rewarded with draft picks for blowing so much on their QB that they couldn't afford to keep the other players?
While some seem to think that this is a precise and fair compensatory process, I call B/S. There is enormous subjectivity and the same teams seem to always get rewarded.
Why should there be any compensatory picks at all? How can Jake Long be considered as just another player, when he was the first player taken in his draft year? He was worth a few players in terms of player payments.

Okay let me first say I'm not an idiot and have good working knowledge of how the comps are decided:

Gained: Amendola 5yrs/31m $$$, Svitek 1yr/1m $, Isaac Sopoaga 3yrs/ 11m $$
Lost: Welker 2yr/12m $$$, Donald Thomas 4yr/14m $$, Patrick Chung 3yr/10m $$, Woodhead 2yr/5m $

My point is the two wideouts should cancel each other out based upon the contracts they signed. I do not see a net loss left over between the other three that qualifies as a 4th rounder. Call me crazy but whatever.

Nobody is saying or even inferring you are an idiot. That said, there is a clear imbalance there in what NE gained and what they lost. Especially when you consider the on field production of the players. Heck, Svitek almost doesn't count in the calculation his contract is so insignificant. If I look at it the way you are looking at it you are saying (Welker and Amendola cancel out) two guys that started only 4 games between them are worth only a little less then guys who signed contracts worth close to $10 million/yr. I don't think you're crazy or an idiot or anything negative, but I don't think you're being objective.
