Gesicki flashed some of the talent that convinced the Dolphins he was a better option in Round 2 than Dallas Goedert. But it came in a session closed to reporters.
In the four practices open to reporters this spring, the rookie out of Penn State has been a non-factor. He has even looked lost at times.
As a result, his reps have largely come with the backups this spring, behind returning veterans A.J. Derby and MarQueis Gray.
Now, if the calendar read early September instead of early June, this would be a flashing red light. Instead, it's one of countless unresolved story lines as the Dolphins near their summer break.

Why do I get the impression they are setting us up for Gesicki being a bust this year?

Gase probably won't even play him much his rookie season ala Ajayi, Drake, Grant etc.

Not worried. Tannehill will make sure he gets up to speed. It might take both rookies a little more time to learn the playbook, but it is way too early to be concerned about standing out.

It's a slow news season. Minicamp isn't much to write about to begin with. The reporters didn't even get to see all of that. So now they have to write about what they didn't see .....

Not really their fault but not much of a story.

The media seems upset that they didn't get a Gesicki show.
I didn't see any reports of Gesicki droppinging any balls. Perhaps they just had him running routes (no targets) and/or pass protecting to get him up to speed.

Godert was the far more polished sure thing. We definitely took a risk and went with the potential. We'll see if it pays off.

Gesicki is a more polished route runner actually. Goedert is a more polished blocker sure

They have obviously identified something he "can't do". Blocking was the weakness in the scouting report but correct me if I'm wrong, they don't do much blocking in minicamp. Hopefully not a big issue

Just the eye test. His routes were more polished, he had more natural hands, he was a better blocker etc.

Agreed though that it's hard to tell with inferior competition.

There's also a huge difference in what's deemed a success during the installation process of the offense vs. actually practicing that offense come training camp.

We are literally talking about a guy's progress who's yet to sign his first NFL contract.

He'll be fine guys. It's a complicated system for the TE in this offense. He'll get his looks but don't expect HOF numbers in his rookie season. It's just uncommon for rookie tight ends to majorly impact the offense.

Anyone stop to think maybe, just maybe, they are teaching Gesicki to do the things he isn't already good at?

Shocking I know, that the kid still hasn't picked up all the nuances of being an NFL TE yet.

Engram and Howard had 6 TD's each last year, Njoku had 4.

No reason not to expect Gesicki to fall in line with those numbers, probably have 5 TD's. I could easily see 7 or 8 though.

This should be the setting where a finesse combine elite athlete tight end shines.

    Maybe not in 11 on 11 but 7 on 7 and 1 on 1s

The elite athlete rb ballage has.

If he's not mainly running with the 1s and 2s he's seeing a lot of Bryce Petty under center.

What a non-story. Even moreso since it's out there that he flashed in at least one practice.

I guess some people thought the best way to get Gesicki up to speed is to practice nothing but Dwight Clarkesque jump balls in the RZ all day. (RIP Dwight)

Didn't occur to some that maybe working on the things your not good at first might be the way to be brought up to speed.

Best guess AJ Derby and Durham Smythe for base package TE, Gesicki comes in mainly on passing downs, that wouldn't surprise me. I don't expect him to start right away.

Ya, next year. It's irresponsible to compare the readiness of a RB to any other position outside of P/K.

Antonio Gates first full season produced this:
15 games, 24 receptions, 389 yards, 16.2 YPC, 2 TD's. 16.2 YPC his rookie year was actually the highest he posted in his career. And that's with Drew Brees robotically completing passes at will.

    2nd season:
    15 games, 81 receptions, 964 yards,11.9 YPC, 13 TD's.

Huge learning curve for guy's who grew up essentially playing a different sport first. But clearly there is something to learning an NFL offense.

It's not a huge concern with Gesicki in OTAs. If we hear these same stories by preseason week 3 then is the time to be concerned.

Got to keep in mind that it's early. It's a bit concerning, but let's give it time before we start talking bust. I actually think he'll have a quality year.

Except Antonio Gates never played football in college unlike our top 50 pick.

Can’t just leave that out when talking learning curve. Tight end is like defensive tackle in that it does usually take time to develop.

Best reason for pause I’ve heard is he’s getting reps with the second string qbs.

Better show up in pads. Pick fails if he isn’t a win option flex and iso on Sundays.

Get stronger in that vertical stem.

I mean anybody expecting more than a red zone option in 2018 is just overshooting their expectations.

I know some people like the receiving/blocking 1 2 punch from the draft, but I really think we made the wrong choice by not taking Goedert in the 2nd round. Goedert looked like a day 1 complete TE, Gesicki looks like Julius Thomas. Now Thomas was great for a second back in the day but he is very one dimensional . . . And a 4th rounder. High second is rich for that type of TE . . . . But it certainly is early. This kid needs to be effective, the earlier the better.

Thing I don’t like most other than that stride takes away from the short area quickness in routes and the finesse game is that body looks like a nfl qb.

High cut thin torso. The top of the route physicality needs significant improvement.

Been posting and getting blasted alot regarding the expectations regarding the projected contributions of these rookie players and or new players we aquired. History and logic means it can take awhile to gell even with all the right pieces. The biggest contributing facor will be these new coaches if they are the right guys too.

I think they (media) are just stirring things up to get a reaction. It's that time of year.

Notice how casually dismissive they are of multiple interviewees bringing up Gesicki's highlight reel play during one of the practices (because it didn't come during a media portion), and how vague they are with statements like, "at times, he looked lost..."

A rookie looks lost sometimes during his first off season. News Flash! He won't be as great as some expectations have him being during his rookie year, but he'll be fine. People need to let young players grow and cool it with the high expectations or dire forecasts. In the end his production will be determined by his usage and Miami has it's share of receiving options. I think he'll make his share of plays when called upon and his skill set will impact defense even when he's not the primary target.

I'll worry about Gesicki if half or three quarters way thru the year he's not getting it.

Still like to pickup a veteran defensive tackle who is an excellent run stopper, still view this as this teams biggest need. Leave Hayes at DE where he played excellent in 2017

It would be lie if I said that the no-huddle didn't worry me, start 2016 season 0-5 do away with no-huddle and go 10-1, why I have this feeling Tannehill play's better with a huddle, if Gase absolutely needs to do it I hope it's implementation is better than the first go-around.

That is not totally impossible and yet 8 TDs would be a Dolphins season record for a TE. (Is that the lowest number for any NFL team?)

The only issue I have right now with Gesicki is that I bought his jersey with the #86 on it.
Hope if Caroo gets cut he doesn't change his number.
