STILL PERFECT and UNTOUCHABLE!

GO DOLPHINS!

Meh, I think it's about time we stop living 40+ years in the past. It seems incredibly obnoxious year after year that we celebrate something decades in the past, because we have nothing to celebrate for the last 15+ years.

Records are made to be broken, and I was having fun watching Carolina being unbeaten. Yes I said 'fun'...something that is obviously not had while watching the Dolphins.

Obviously you were not alive at the time or were not yet a fan.

It was like living a dream. It was an indescribable experience to be a rabid Dolphins fan at that time. It was the most inspirational corporeal experience of my life. You say forget about it........utter madness.

I don't give a **** what yo say! You obviously do not appreciate history and brother IT WILL NEVER BE BROKEN!! It may be irrelevant to you but not to are brethren who had experienced it. Enjoy our history. We are fans and if it's the only ******* thing we got so be it! GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Obviously I mention my Las Vegas experiences all the time. One aspect I seldom talk about is all the conversation about that 17-0 distinction. Young sportsminded guys from all over the country end up in those sportsbooks, some to stay and some for a brief visit. It is incredible how often that 17-0 mark is discussed. I heard it in sportsbooks and poker rooms and buffets. Everywhere. Literally every fan base is jealous. It is incredible ignorance not to recognize that everybody would be protecting it if it belonged to them. We are the holders and that distinction can exponentially expand in lore as long as no one matches it. It is the single most awesome accomplishment in American team sports.

Nobody cares about unbeaten in college football, not unless it encompasses three consecutive seasons or more. Unbeaten is impossible in NBA or NHL or MLB. It has reached the point that unbeaten is elusive in college basketball. Witness Kentucky last season. But even if somebody does it there merely will be references to UCLA teams of old, and so forth. It's like a new Triple Crown winner in horse racing. Fantastic but hardly Never Never Land.

We don't face any of that. There was one early NFL team that was unbeaten but had a tie. Nobody remembers that or cares. Chris Berman popped the cork tonight. I loved it, as always. Name any other single season team in any sport that is summoned so often. The '85 Bears have already started to fade. Legendary but other teams will take their place. Nobody stands on a pedestal anywhere close to the '72 Dolphins. However, it comes with a warning, a massive warning. If another team does finish undefeated and untied then those old Dolphins are not considered co-equal. Hardly. Warts will appear that never were actually there. That overpowering jealousy that has built up for decades will explode through every crevice. Right now it is packaged as "shutting up" the old players like Mercury Morris. That is laughably disingenuous, as I've emphasized. The haters will celebrate a new unbeaten even if every player and fan of those '72 Dolphins has long passed.

I wish I could say that I can't believe any Dolphin fan is dense enough not to understand the astonishing weight of that accomplishment, and actually roots for it to be equaled, or doesn't care. It shows up every year, or at least every time some team wanders deep unbeaten. I'm always trying to envision what they see on the next page. Some other franchise has replaced ours as mega legendary. Now what? Do the current Dolphins draft better? Does that patched stadium suddenly match the new ones springing up, like Minnesota's that we saw glimpses of tonight? Does it boost our YPA or our win expectancy?

If we are somehow determined to "let go" maybe we should put a time limit on the Ring of Honor or team records or retired numbers, stuff like that. Scrape them clear every 20 or 30 years. And make sure that new Ring of Honor is tougher looking, some type of scowl attached.

I appreciated one Steeler fan and ultra sharp football guy named Sean who pulled me aside about 15 years ago in front of the Riviera Casino. I may have told this story before. His eyes were absolutely bugging out. I had told him long previously that I was from Miami and had season tickets as a kid to the '72 Dolphins:

"The only perfect team in the history of the league. Do you have any idea how huge that is? Do you have any idea?"

man i was born in 86 and my dad and i were texting celebrating the panthers lost. it was only a matter of time. they have had a weak schedule, and when the play the big boys in the playoffs they wont last.
back on subject. This is something to be celebrated even in a bad season. its the teams legacy. "our" team is the first and only to accomplish something. younger generation does not appreciate these things. Its something to be proud of even though the team is in shambles now. i will always celebrate when everyone is beaten.

You sound like a jet fan.

if being perfect isnt something to be proud of and celebrate, then what is? And who's living in a 40 year past? That record happened. No joke, no hoping or wishing we could have done it. The only time it comes up is when some team looks like they may do it. Your acting like thats all the fans and team talk about.

Dont understand your bitterness over our team being the only perfect record. Bet you laugh during funerals.

Sure your a finz fan?

I was there with you brother, and lucky enough to have attended every home game that astonishing year. There is no way to describe the madness of the city during that time. Euphoria is the only word I can come up with.

Hail to the Dolphins, LONG LIVE THE ONLY PERFECT SEASON, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT Miami.

I'm 50 years old - grew up in Miami ... My dad took me to a couple of those games (Houston & New England). We sat as a family along with friends and neighbors with a hog in the pit, and watched that Super Bowl and can tell you that even as a kid, I could tell that the Dolphins had done something very special. Miami (the City) was golden for the days and weeks that came after, and I just can't describe the pride the fans and community had. It's tough to let go of that, but why would I ever want too?

Congratulations to that '72 squad.

I hope nobody ever breaks that record....(except Miami). i always celebrate when the last unbeaten falls

Amen NCFinfan.....I'm a bit older than you, but enjoyed that time as a Fins fan very much. It is unfortunate that we have a whole generation of fans that have never seen them win......but one day, that will turn around.

Congrats to the 72 Dolphins!!!

Yep, and I especially laugh at the corpse of a record that happened 40 years ago. Pretty sad that we're so mediocre as a franchise that a record 40 years ago is the only thing we can celebrate.

"Oh look, another ****ty season. It's OK, we went undefeated 43 years ago! Why even live in the present when you can live in the year 1972 over and over!"
