Curious as to why guys want to tank

Look at all the teams around the league that have traded away all the talent they have and tell me which ones are among the contenders now.

You don't do anything by reducing your roster to scraps except gain a couple more draft positions while creating an environment that is massively harder for any player you draft to actually have success. You end up just like the Dolphins are now- having brought in a ton of elite players yet not having ever built the foundation so its all a house of cards.

I lived through 2007. I lived through 2011. I lived through 2019. We always end up spending all that glorious capital gained just trying to replace guys we sent out, and end up with Jamar Taylor instead of Vontae Davis, Brandon Gibson instead of Brandon Marshall, Noah Igby instead of Minkah Fitzpatrick, Austin Jackson and Jesse Davis instead of Laremy Tunsil.

The Chiefs, Steelers, Eagles, have never tanked. The Bills didn't tank before they got Josh Allen.

The best strategy is just to intentionally not sign expensive contracts for a few years like the Vikings did. Let the bad contracts work their way through.
THIS RIGHT HERE.....

Do you really think the current FO would get it right?

We’ve done this before. Recently. Overhaul.

Nah. So long as our FO remains intact, we’re hosed.

But I have to admit I was surprised when Flores got axed. Didn’t see that coming.

Maybe…..
I don’t want to tank.

But we’re going to go 6-11 even if we don’t tank.

So all things considered, I’m rooting for 3-14 and a better draft choice.

I disagree with you there. There is nothing wrong with when we tanked. We got extremely blessed it was 2020 and not 2021. All of the QBs are Pro Bowl caliber.

What screwed us was Ross/Grier got impatient. Can’t fault them for trading for Tyreek but to turn around and drop more high picks on Chubb and other old vets then signing old players like Armstead put us at win now too soon.

How much time you have??
The team as constructed is awful. The starting qb is very accurate and extremely fragile and immobile.. he’s a good qb if you can keep him upright. They decided to not invest in the offensive line and draft an undersized edge rusher who doesn’t do much early. They then took a project tackle who is a redshirt with a glass left tackle who never plays half a season.
They have no tight end or third receiver so they are reliant on waddle and cheetah. They have berrios and some dubise guy nobody wanted.
They backed Jo the truck for Ramsey, they decided they Skylar Thompson was a god backup knowing their qb is always hurt. Imagine watching Skylar every day for 2 years and deciding he’s the guy tj backuo glass Tua. The entire thing stinks keep seiler holland Phillips Ajax and waddle and blow this **** up.. the teams bag win in January have good corn stable string QBs who can move, and real red zone options not a bunch of midgets..
the coach can’t get a play in he can’t think ahead. He calls a play and has no clue what the next play is based on how the play may go. He kicks a fg on 4th and 1 from 57 yards then punts in the same scenario on 4th and 12 down big. He’s so in over his head it’s insane. He uses timeouts like it’s candy because he can’t get a play in. He built a team in his image. Soft but flashy when it’s all good. He’s a total clown show, got hired off Shannahan and has no idea what he’s doing in game. He saw what happened last year a and doubled down on A soft team with no offensive line, but don’t worry he’s scouting edge rushers and running backs for next years d
Jonnu is perfect for this O and he can block. Our OL and Tua's fragileness are why we are 1-2

The thing is this team could go 6-11 yet still have been just a small difference- health, better coaching, ball bouncing right- from being a legit contender. And that's just what people don't get- as long as you don't sabotage your roster a la the 2019 Dolphins, the recent Panthers, or the Fields-era Bears- you can go from bad season to per.ennial contender pretty quickly.

The hardest thing to do in this league is find talent. When people talk of tanking, they are usually envisioning a firesale- and those usually just result in years spent just trying to reassemble the same level of talent as you had before, and if you bring in too many young players in one short span, you're just gonna not be able to afford half of them in a few years- as we saw with Tua, AJax, Hunt, and Wilkins all coming due at the same time, and seeing two of those guys walk despite being positions of need.

If you believe in tanking, just watch Caleb Williams and Bryce Young.
Thank you. And we would likely require said rookie to start immediately. If the overall history of rookie QBs is any benchmark, he will struggle. Then all the cries of "Fire ____ !!!", "Fire ____!!!", and "We should drafted _____!!!" will emerge, landing us pretty much right back at square one.

So true

The best thing to do is have a decent team in place for a young QB to step into. Blowing it all up isnt necessary
Yes. I think there is a very high correlation between having a good landing spot as far as roster and coaching and "making it" as a QB. People label guys busts and just assume they were pre-destined to be busts.

I can definitely imagine a world where Pat Mahomes ended up in Chicago and sucked. Andy Reid, an absolute offensive guru, thought he was Brett Favre. Brett Favre was a bust in Atlanta.

It certainly helps when you’re a legitimate playoff team and you trade the 27th pick, a 3rd round pick and your 1st round pick in 2018 to the Bills for the 10th pick and land Mahomes. Or when you’re the Bills and you land Allen the following year 7th overall and he’s the 3rd QB off the board. Meanwhile the Eagles got Hurts with the 53rd pick in 2020.

I agree with your post. But there is always a little bit of luck involved when drafting a QB. We could have drafted Herbert and there is a chance Flores doesn’t get fired (as soon). We might have never ended up with McDaniel as HC.

WEVE NEVER TANKED PROPERLY NOR TANKED THE CORRECT YEAR.

we shouldave tanked the Andrew Luck year but the Colts beat us to it.

That being said… its yet to determine if we should tank this year for ewers or the next year for Manning/ nico lameneava.
In order to properly tank you obviously need an oblivious coach or an interin coach that is not fighting for its job… Also a dummy squad with sabotaging plays. That obviously would imply firing grier and mcd and trading key players for picks.
Its much easier than people think… but you need to hit some key strokes in order to do it right and be convinced the prospect qb 1 you are drafting is the next elway/manning/luck.
I wouldnt have tanked for example for Trevor Lawrence nor i wouldave tanked for the overrated usc qb the bears got.

But to me Ewers with all the pressure he had last year and this year with the Mannning and press tells me a lot about his personality .
The Colts didn't tank when they got Luck- not really.

Dolphin fans say tank and they say- trade Hill! Trade Ramsey! Trade everyone. The Colts had mostly the same team in Andrew Luck's first game that Peyton Manning was contending with every year. They didn't just jettison talent. The Bengals didn't tank when they got Burrow- he took over with much the same team that had been making the playoffs with on a yearly basis with Andy Dalton.

Its really quite a mistaken impression to think you need to get the first overall pick to get a good QB. I quite like the build a good team and then take advantage of a trade up method- like happened with both Mahomes and Allen.

you must be either very young or dont know anything about team building if you really believe the colts that year didnt tank.
Thats like discussing gravity

Not this year but for sure next one when Manning declares!

And Flores is looking like one of the best defensive coordinators on the entire NFL. Maybe we got rid of a good coach. 😢
