Dan Marino: What the hell is he doing?

To my very limited understanding he is more or less now a figurehead who once in a while gets asked for an opinion by the owner. Otherwise he pretty much shows up to games or the occasional practice and bro's out.

It's a pretty cool gig for him.

No, he's in the building every day and his official role is "Advisor to the Owner".
Ya. Shaking hands kissing babies. He is living the good life and he deserves it. He doesn't want a real job that takes 15 hours a day (or 2 if your Grier).

True but he's gotta know how broken this ship is!!
Maybe. I can think of a few different possibilities.

Knowing something is broken, and knowing how to fix it are two different things.

Maybe he is good buddies with Grier.

Maybe he's fine with not a good rushing attack. He preferred passing 45 times a game when he played.

Ya probably. He just doesn't want to get involved. He had the chance once he said hell no after a day. And nothing wrong with that. He is probably just enjoying being retired and having less stress.

Dan has been around the team pretty much every year since he retired. He has the best jobs in the world for the best organization for a legend like Dan. Everywhere he shows up is basically promotional and photo op. All he has to do is think a moment and offer his opinion on anything football related, which is all he's ever really had to do in his adult life. It's a slam dunk.

How much does he care if Jack McDaniels is giving all of us terrible hangovers on mornings after Dolphins football games?? Sure, maybe he cares a little. I mean, so what? >90% of NFL coaches are failures. It's like a 1 in 10 shot to get someone who will win in this current climate for a little while. Give it one more season of this mess and then expect a refresh, and Dan will bless the next incoming coach and GM. Because that's what he's essentially paid to do.

I think he is just fine having zero responsibility at all. Here goes to games because he likes football and he is still a Dolphin. He just doesn't want the job.

Most likely the answer.

I mean I'm sure he has, and expresses his opinions.

In 2004, for a couple of weeks, Dan was the Senior Vice President of Football Operations. After he realized how much work it involved, he resigned. I remember stories of him scouting guys like J. P. Losman and Drew Stanton, because we weren't poised to get any of the top guys. He resigned after a few weeks and then came back like 10 years later as simply an advisor, which is not much. I think basically he gets to decide what he wants to do and how involved he wants to be.
