Dan Marino: What the hell is he doing?

Dan is Dolphins Royalty and that is his job.......waving to crowds and talking about the old days. I'm sure he weighs in with an opinion or two when asked, but doubt beyond that he has much to do with football operations

Nothing wrong with asking the question OP

In the building every day?

May I ask how you know this?

He was hired to take a more hands on position, and decided after a few days he wasn't interested in investing the time and commitment it would take.

He then took a more "figure head" position.

I think he was hired for his name. Which is to keep fans interested and loyal.

Bingo.

He's has no power. His advisory title is merely there as a ceremonial position but nothing else.

Of course he can discuss things with Ross because he has access, but Ross (and Grier btw) is of course under no kind of pressure to really listen to anything Dan says or is suggesting beyond nodding his head and saying 'thank you for your input' or 'I'll think about it'.

Larry Csonka has the same kind of power probably but he's not on the payroll.

Now when John Elway was/is with the Broncos now he had power.......this isn't that.

I read an opinion somewhere that the natually gifted players... people like Marino who instinctively have that gift which makes them great generally do not like coaching. They have a hard time understanding why mear mortals 'just don't get it'.

It's not to say they don't put the work in, but they never had to really 'learn' the game. It was just god given instinct which makes it hard for them to translate what they 'know' to others.

No idea if it's a valid theroy or not but it seems logical to me. You see a lot of coaches out there who were backup QBs but it seems far fewer who were starters.
Gretzky talked about back when he was a coach. Basically he did put in all the work but just never understood why they couldn't see what he saw on film and in the game. And Gretzky is about the biggest example of not being the biggest or fastest guy, but nobody had his mind for the game.

gets paid a fair bit of money to be a figurehead, sit in the press box w ross and tell him what he wants to hear. 24 years of evidence to show marino is useless. the guy wants his paycheck so he tells the boss what he wants to hear. no defined roll or responsibility. doesn't mean he is a bad guy or anything, this is just the job description. frankly shows one more problem with how ross has structured things. hires bad people, bad org structure and process, surrounds himself with paid sycophants. is what it is.

actually would love to know what marino is getting paid for this. i bet not chump change. i would love that job. get the best seats in the house on sunday, maybe another $500k-$1mm, all you have to do is smile.
What? He isn't a yes man and never has been butted heads with Jimmy Johnson all the time when he became coach. Marino is retired and just enjoying life. He cares a lot more about hi foundation then he does the Miami Dolphins. He had a chance to make changes to the Dolphins and decided it wast for him. Good for him.

yes he is retired and enjoying life. that is exactly the job description i described. being retired and enjoying life is not the same job description as being on the field. if he is getting paid alot of money to smile, why does he care at this point? obviously he is more than willing to do it. i do not blame him.

Well that is his job. Shaking hands and kissing babies. Sorry if I miss understood your post. You made it sound like he should be doing more. He made it clear that he doesn't want to do that after he quit on that job.

Sorry if wasn't clear that is what I meant. I don't blame him one bit I would do same.

Dan the man played for Shula. He's got to know this frat-house feel-good, no discipline philosophy of McGenius doesn't work. He is supposed to be an "advisor to the owner" Ross. Is he advising or just sticking around for a "ring" which at this point is sadly laughable???
I actually wonder the same thing. I mean, if your not going to be advising and/or assisting with personnel, training or some kind of front office stuff, get you ass out of here. And this is coming from a dude that absolutely loves Marino. But **** man, it's like he's not even tired of this **** show....
