He averaged 5.2 yds per carry last year in games where he got 10+ carries. He had some average runs and was ineffective a lot last year, not being able to get thru some horrendous blocking, but I though there were a lot of quality runs in there as well. Im really hoping he beats the odds this year and takes a step forward.

In one thread we have people insisting that Tannehill has been given enough time and it doesnt matter how inept his supporting caste is because hes proven to be average.
And in another we have people insinuating that Daniel Thomas still has a chance to prove himself and the supporting players hurt him.

The backwardness of this forum sometimes...

People don't like to admit that Thomas was pretty good last year. But we have pretty good already in Miller and Moreno (plus pretty poor in Gillislee).

I'd like to see us cut Thomas and Gillislee loose and see what we have in Damien Williams. But there's a good chance Thomas will be a decent tailback behind a big line who can open holes for him.

I'd still keep Daniel Thomas around. He wasn't as bad as many have suggested and he actually scored some good TDs. He also won us the Pittsburgh game but many prefer to forget the better efforts. At a minimum he represents some good depth, in case of injury.
I expect that Gillislee is vulnerable. We saw zilch last season and he has to show something in Training Camp or he will be cut. Damien Williams from Oklahoma Sooners could overtake him.

I think people get confused because Thomas is quite a big back so the expectation is that short yardage and moving the pile would be his forte, but in reality he is quite a opposite. Average to below average back overall, would hope he is 3rd choice or worse.

Isnt that what TC and preseason are for?

I hope williams shows in preseason

I think DT is underrated. Many on here like to proclaim rookies as future starters but when you think DT is possibly our 3rd choice back, its pretty good depth, without a real no.1

I like how you are trying to be hopeful, but I think you may find similar stats all over the league, especially on teams that do running back by committee as we do. Philbin even said they play the guy "who has the hot hand". So when Thomas does well, he gets more carries and when he stinks, somebody else gets the carries. So if you take his best days, he gets you 5.2, but overall he is what he is. A 3.6 back who can't pass block very well.
I hope he takes a step forward too, but I have a feeling he is a cut, unless nearly everyone stinks which may be the case with Moreno coming in fat and getting hurt and Miller being the most positive story we have at RB right now. Maybe a young dark horse shows up or we claim a vet who is cut and he does well enough to eat some carries up and help Miller and maybe Moreno gets in shape.

Another stat is that in his young career, he gets about 9 carries a game averaging 3.6. As you said, on his good days he gets 10 carries. So what does that tell us about his average typical day? Not good enough to get those carries.

he also plays hurt. like seriously hurt. i'm not confusing him with gale sayers, but i like having the guy around.

It's kinda like comparing Tannehill to Marino...some think Thomas should be Ricky. Those players are SO rare...they're not the bar, they're in their own class. Thomas is a solid 3rd option guy, an OK 2nd option.

People don't like to admit that after more than a decade of watching bad football, they have skewed views of what constitutes "pretty good."

It is strange that you want to cut a player that was "pretty good," though. Personally, I think our RB situation is pretty bad. We know Thomas sucks, we have no idea about Miller (though, by reading some threads, you'd think we have a pro bowler in him), and we have no idea if Moreno's one good year was legit or a product of a stellar passing offense or if he is healthy. Too many question marks for me.

As a Danial Thomas fan, I'm pretty much of fan of all the Dolphins, I wouldn't mind keeping him around. However, I wouldn't say he had a good year last year. He had a very average year for a back up running back, maybe even a bit below average.

Well I hope you do understand Lazor is going to like Thomas more than Miller. While Thomas may lack in some areas, he is good at cutbacks, zone reads, and hitting the backside of the flow of the offense. On top of that he's got pretty good routes for a RB and excellent hands. Better than Miller's. While Miller is a more explosive and home-run hitter, Lazor will start favoring Thomas. I don't have a preference, it is what it is.

So as long as they have the words "Miami Dolphins" in their job description your a fan? The quality of the player and how he effects the team in negative ways has no bearing on your support? Im shocked that people on here feel that way. No, really, shocked.

For those that are essentially suggesting that we just keep him because, um, we just should: i vehemently disagree. We should express no loyalty to any running back who doesnt show a spark of potential. Its too easy of a position to get production from. Despite the convoluted stats that pop up when people try and defend him, Thomas has shown nothing particularly redeemable. And anything that he might have shown is quickly overshadowed by his flaws. Ignoring the fact that he was a terrible prospect coming out, we've given him 3 years to get his **** together. He hasnt. Its time to move on. Cut him and bring in some young players. If they show anything, then we are in business. If not, then we are no worse then we were with Thomas.
