Dan The Man
The more i look at the Garrard signing the the more excited i get about what Philbin and Sherman may be able to do with this guy. This guy was in the pro bowl just 2 seasons ago but didn't play last year......recovering from surgery. By all accounts he is now fully healthy and ready to go. He has a strong arm and can make all the throws, has real good mobility, good feet, good pocket awareness, decent size, and excellent leadership qualities from what I've read. On top of all that he has a ton of game experience and he's already played in a variation of the west coast offense.
I like Matt Moore and i think he did a good job for us last year but Garrard has some advantages over him in some key areas.
1. Stronger arm than Matt Moore with better accuracy in the short to medium areas. They are fairly even with the long ball........Moore may be a little better there but it's close.
2. More mobile and a better runner than Matt Moore.
3. Much more starting experience than Matt Moore.
4. Already has experience in a west coast type offense whereas Matt has never run it before.
5. Played in a pro bowl. Only very good QB's play in pro bowls.
Now I'm not saying that Garrard is the long term answer for us........obviously he's not, but neither is Matt Moore. What I'm saying is that he has a very good chance to win the starting job for us this year and will provide good experience for the rookie QB we draft to learn from. If Garrard is at the top of his game he could be a very good stop gap for a year or two, maybe longer or until our young guy is ready to go and can beat him out for the job. If we add some firepower at the skill positions and fortify the offensive line we could very well be looking at a post season berth.
Here's a link to a highlight video of his 2010 season. There are a lot of things to like about this guy when watching this video.
Cheers :)
