Davone Bess is expected to remain the Dolphins' primary punt returner.

Coach Tony Sparano confirmed that Reggie Bush will only be used as a situational returner, if at all. That means Bess, who ranked eighth in punt return average last season, maintains his status as an asset in return yardage leagues. He's still a good bet for 70-plus catches out of the slot.

"situational" as in if we are down by 7 or less in the 4th quarter. Not a big fan of Bess on punts but he is atleast secure with the ball.

secure with the ball and in quick sand when running laterally from a standing still position...i agree with the handling of bush though on returns...very minimally when we need a boost...

but god we don't have anyone else in camp who can field a punt and provide a better spark than bess??? ugh

just what I was thinking. he's quick to fair catch and slow when he does return it

I find it disconcerting that Gates isn't considered a better option.

You've gotta be kidding me?! I absolutely love bess as a receiver but he is by far the most unappealing punt returner in the league. Yes, he's secure with the ball but jeez Sparano, grow a pair and take a damn risk with someone with speed to break a big one, or at least more than 5 yards a punt return.

And then when our PR fumbles the ball it automatically gives them a monster advantage and you guys will be complaining about Bess not being in there.

I agree as well. I'm a huge Bess fan but it's hard to get excited about him returning punts again. He just doesn't bring much excitement to the position, although he is consistent at least and like others have mentioned he's good about securing the ball. A guy like Bush, with his moves and speed, is a lot more exciting because he's a threat to score whenever he gets the ball. Maybe Sparano will have a change of heart, sometimes though it just seems like the coaches go out of their way to make sure Miami never makes a big play. I know it's not true and I do love the Dolphins, it just feels like there's never a threat of "instant offense" like a lot of other teams have.

Bess is a safe choice for a a punt returner. He alsmot never fumbles, very sure handed, and doesn't ever lose yards. The downside is that he isn't a guy that can make a few people miss and take it to the house. He will occasionally break off a 20+ yard return, but isn't a real threat to score.

Horrible news, we needed a spark in the return game. Should've kept Ginn as a returner, imo. I know I know, he's a punk. But who is a better returner on our team?

This is unfortunate. We need speed at that position. Bess is not fast enough.

Another case of Sparano playing it safe.
