Are you sure you understand the difference between simply stating an opinion and whining?

Rhetorical

That article is from May... I don't claim to know who is winning that qb competition, but I wouldnt use a 2 month old article to prove any points. That said, I'm glad we didn't overpay for Flynn regardless of what happens with Tannehill. I'll put money up that Flynn doesn't win a super bowl as a starter at any point in his career.

When you state an opinion roughly twice a day in the face of the previous decision, it comes off as whining.

Also, to think that the dead money had ANYTHING to do with Matt Flynn not being here is illogical, considering the amount of money Miami would have spent to get him. It's insignificant.

I'm a big Wilson fan so I've been following the seattle QB story a bit. Basically, they wanted to ditch Jackson, start Flynn and have Wilson as understudy. But Flynn has been so disappointing, Jackson got away more reps than planned and Wilson killed it in training to the point he leapfrogged Flynn in most people's opinion and is pushing Jackson to be the main guy going into training.

Wilson is the hardest working player in camp, totally commands the huddle and is impressing everyone with his maturity. Meanwhile, fingernails are being chewed over Flynn.

That summary is taken from my reading of a good few reports, forums and pundits, but clearly it's early days.

Nice. I like Wilson also. I live in Big Ten country (Chicago) so I see a lot of Wisconsin games around here. I was hoping that we drafted him in the 4th had we decided not to take Tannehill in the first. Not for a second did I ever want Flynn but said I'd trust Philbin's opinion and be extremely comfortable if we passed on him (which we obviously did). I've said since the season ended that if he was 6'3, Wilson would of been a top 10 pick.

The real reason Matt Flynn wasn't signed in the off season imo...salary cap mismanagement.

Yeah ... every now & again ... I mention that one of the Dolphin's bigger FUBAR's is "salary cap mismanagement" assembling a sub-.500 team for top dollar ... just grinds me. Been going on a long time & is a hallmark of the Tuna administration.

Most folks don't seem interested in these keystone foundation facts that affect us for years. This stuff strangles our free agency moves.

I don't think that was the reason mate. I think it has become clear that many teams in the NFL were simply not convinced that Flynn is a starter just yet and therefore not worth the money. Considering Philbin had first hand experience of Flynn it spoke volumes when we did not pick him up. I honestly think Flynn is going to flop in Seattle, not because he is a bad player, but because he is on what is a very average team. In Green Bay he had some amazing weapons, in Seattle not so much.

Dead money on your salary cap is:

A) A direct reflection on your General Manager's decision making
B) A fact of life in the NFL

If this is true, and if we're number 1 in dead money, then that means our G.M. is the worst in the league. Wonder what number we are?

Uh... what on earth. My brain hurts trying to figure out your logic here. Even if you simplify a GM's job down to simple CAP MANAGEMENT you still can't make this argument because there are so many factors that go into it that I'm honestly just blown away.

I'd say a statistic that "literally shows" the quality (or ineptitude) of a GM would probably have to relate to the amount of starters he has drafted over a... let's say... 3 year period. Not just with your team, but in the NFL total. That's a good way to do it.

Vernon Carey falling off a bus in terms of playing skill and discipline (plus injury) can't really fall on Ireland. He looked and played like a top tier RT in the NFL when he received that extension, and he was relatively young.

First off, the Dolphins $13 million in dead cap space is not the most in the NFL. In fact they don't even have the most in the AFC East. The Patriots lead the way with over $15 million in dead cap space and even the Bills have over $10 million. The Dolphins for years, dating back to even the Wannstedt years have been always close to the cap and in past years had to actually release players just to get under. However Ireland and Aponte have slowly been fixing the cap problems of the past regimes and starting next year we will start to see their work pay off as the Dolphins have over $50 million in space for the 2013 offseason.

Dead Cap Money across the NFL - Dolphins 4th worst

CKparrothead explained that all teams have dead cap money, so I was curious to see if we are well or poorly managed compared with the other teams. I looked up every team's current cap deadmoney and the results are quite interesting. We are 4th worst at 13.136M.
Indianapolis is worst at $37.25M (includes Manning $10.4M, Brackett $7.2M, D Clark $5.58M). Oakland Raiders are 2nd worst at $20.25M (Wimbley $6.5M, Routt $5M, Boss $4.25M). New England just beat us on $13.601M (19 players led by Bodden $3m, T Warren $2.75M). It is clear that some teams use it a lot more than others.
Best result was San Francisco with no dead cap money. (Sorry CK only 31/32 teams had deadcap money. You were almost right)

Full list:
Arizona......$3.05M, Atlanta.....$2.2M, Baltimore......$5.5M, Buffalo.....$3.741M, Carolina.....$2.508M, Cincinatti.....$0.459M, Chicago.....$1.832M, Cleveland.....$1M, Dallas.....$5.537M, Denver.....$1.2M, Detroit.....$0.328M, Green Bay.....$0.068M, Houston.....$10.067M, Indianapolis.....$37.25M, Jacksonville.....$5.587M, Kansas City.....$1.6M, Minnesota.....$6.915M, New England.....$13.601M, New Orleans.....$0.025M, New York Giants.....$2.41M, New York Jets.....$2.236M, Oakland.....$20.25M, Philadelphia.....$4.926M, Pittsburgh.....$6.131M, San Diego.....$9.428M, San Francisco.....$0, Seattle.....$1M, SLouis.....$2.298M Tampa Bay.....$2.4M, Tennessee.....$1.333M, Washington.....$2.622M

It is what it is. It is indicative of making mistakes in free agency IMHO. By next season, the cap should be in good shape.

the cap changes year after year the only problem is when you have a lot of space being use by a few players

I'm interested in how that compares to other teams. It seems like a lot of dead money, but I know there's a certain amount that has to be considered acceptable.

So basically the Dolphins fan base wanted the GM fired because he passed on a 3rd string QB.
