3/4 of the remaining teams have TOP defenses. Granted, the Giants were lower in rankings than ussual this season, with everyone healthy they are once again a strong defensive squad.

The Giants won b/c they were able to get turn overs and knock aaron rodgers around.

The 9ers got 5 turnovers and laid the wood on the saints all day.

Baltimore of course came up big on D when it counted.

Only the pats remain.

What does this say? It DOES NOT say that a QB and high powered offense is irrelevant. No, every one of the remaining teams (except maybe balt) also have capable offenses that could come through in the clutch when it counted, and could also make plays, HOWEVER. the reason these teams won was b/c when it counted, their DEFENSE was able to hold high powered offenses down long enough to give their team a chance, and with a chance, almost any team in this league can win ball games.

what it does say is that DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. you may have glitz and records with just an offense, but when it counts most you still need one of the top 10 defenses just like you need a top 10 QB to make it in this league.

one thing i do find interesting is that Joe Flacco and Alex SMith (despite what debbie downers want to cry about) are comparable to most average QBs, be in matt moore, be it a second round draft pick etc. limited mistakes, and good supporting cast can win ball games. Eli wasnt in 07 what he is now btw. and that 07 superbowl was another example of this.

what im sayin is that with the dolphins - our solid D, if it can produce turn overs, and our play makers in place on offense - we can CONTEND (not necessarily be superbowl bound) RIGHT NOW. We just need a HC with some fire and a good idea about how to use what we have (harbaugh in san fran.)

for the rest of the league - it says that all this crap they are trying to pull and all the speculation taht "defense doesnt matter its an all offense league now" is not really true.

and mark my words - tom brady and the pats with that weak defense and that new gimmick double TE/Mighty midget offense will not win the super bowl. if Balt is too weak to stack up, NY and San Fran can and prob. will beat them.

that is all.

this was already posted, was going to link you, but noticed you in the list of thanks on it............... so you read the other one and still decided to start your own thread ?? ... WTF ?

Defense Reigns Supreme sounds way better anyways.......

Two elite QBs left in the playoffs.

Two average QBs left in the playoffs...both better than Matt Moore.

No one ever said you didn't need defense to win.

By the way, 49ers put up 36 points. Saints put up 32. Giants put up 37. Patriots put up 45.

Offense, offense, offense.

I didn't realize anyone was saying defense wasn't a very important aspect... People are saying that defense becomes irrelevant when you trot out mediocre QB's like Chad Henne and Matt Moore.

RG3 or we will stick with moore anyway

and I doubt we will do any worse then this season with the schedule next year so we won't even be able to draft a goood QB it's time with deal with it get QB from FA/trade or RG3

Some people are really stretching to find a way around this massive hole we have at QB.

Yep. Just keep building that defense guys! We can CONTEND with Matt Moore at QB!

no, my point is that you dont need such a highly touted qb to win playoff football games.

check how many points people like us or other squads put up on any given sunday. without that D they would not have been in the game.

prior to this year - if we traded for flacco or smith, esp smith, everyone this board would be crying about it. now all the sudden they are average but "better than matt moore" seems like people are just preparing for what to complain about on draft day.

also - look into how many of those points came off of turnovers from the defense.

merge me if you'd like with the other thread i wasnt really thinking. sorry.

and the thing i always say but phins fans wont get - new england won before they were an offensive juggernaught and lost when they were.

Minny lost in 97

Miami never won 1 with Dan Marino.

not discrediting the importance of a QB, but pointing out that trading the whole team for one, just b/c mel kiper likes him, isnt going to guarantee you anything, and maybe wont ever pay off.

I'm all for getting a different QB other than Moore, but I'm not sure if he isn't better than A. Smith and Flacco. I think he is at least as good as those TWO.

The Giants defense is ranked like 28th, but shows up in the playoffs. Their defense looks better that it really was thanks to a good number of drops and the rust on Rodgers for not having played in three weeks. They also have an elite QB in Eli. The 2009 Saints also won the Superbowl with a below average defense .

based on what both these qbs are better

noone would complain about trading for flacco, as for smith he did outplay moore this year and last

Just curious. In what way did Smith outplay Moore? Looking up and down they were pretty dang similar. So I am curious where he outplayed Moore

Also, how did Flacco outplay Moore?

I think we know that d does matter. Ravens were able to hold the Texans to fgs and create turnovers. Giants created them as well and the 49ers that's what makes defenses great takeaways and red zone....the saints should have never gave up what they did that last drive horrible calls.

Pass rush has always been important but football has always been and will always be about match ups. Today it worked out for the giants.
