Derrius Thompson

I'm pretty sure DT had to sign a waiver or some kind of agreement to go onto IR, just for the very reason mentioned here.

I don't care if it is better for the team, there are some things that you do because you respect the people who work for you. If Derrius wasn't seriously injured, this is a really low thing to do, and I'd rather have the players that I'm rooting for get treated fairly than an extra 500,000 dollars so we can sign a scrub.

I agree.

I dont think thats correct. If we had cut DT, chances are that his injury settlement would have been equal to this year's base salary...so we would have had to count the final year amortization of his signing bonus ($557K) and the injury settlement($550k) resulting in a cap charge of $1,107,500.
By going on IR, we pay his base salary (550K) and count the final year of amortization of his signing bonus (557K) resulting in a cap charge of $1,107,500.

We neither lose or gain anything by putting DT on IR as opposed to cutting him.

yeah, that's what i was thinking too. i'm not sure that we actually gain anything and we are kind of screwing him over. of course, he's been compensated very well compared to his contribution during his years as a dolphin. his numbers probably won't even drop that much from being on the IR! :D

Saban is a lowlife creep. That's beyond obvious. Also a very talented football coach. I'll be rooting for the new regime despite its leader, and I've never felt that way about any of my favorite teams in any sport in 30+ years.

Somehow I doubt Derrius would just be duped. There is a players organization. I'm sure they worked some kind of understanding.

I am really starting to think that the ONLY reason that Derrius Thompson was placed on Injured Reserve was to avoid paying the $1,107,500 it would cost, if we were to release him. He's getting paid $550K so I'm thinking Saban figures by placing him on IR (This is the last year of his contract), it would be cheaper to let him sit out the rest of his contract than it would be to pay the $1,107,500 CAP HIT it would to release him. I really do believe this is the logic behind placing him on IR and if that's the case, I think that is a VERY VERY wise business move by Saban saving us AT LEAST $500K. He definitely knows what he's doing and by placing Thompson on IR, it won't cost us any money against the CAP and an injury settlement would be made. Definitely a smart move by Saban from a business standpoint.

I was looking up his cap hit numbers when I read he was put on IR. I totally agree, there is no doubt this is what happen. Also, he seemed to play pretty well that last game and would be decent insurance.

Ummm.....maybe he really blew out his hammy?

:yeahthat:

Saban didn't know for sure after the game if Thompson's injury was serious or not.

OMG finally som1 says it. I read almost 2 pages without this being brought up. Lets hold off calling Saban "a low-life creep" b4 we get some facts.

I wasn't jumping too conclusions, I was more discussing the claims of others that it would be a good business decision to toss a guy on IR.
